Chapter 7 - The Envelopes From Rachel’s Room
The envelopes Lily found became map of entire deception.
One contained Rachel’s first letter to Ethan.
One contained appeal to St. Matthew administration.
One held unsigned complaint against “Samuel Reed.”
Another contained printout of Carter Foundation vote materials.
And one was addressed:
LILY AND NOAH — FROM MOM.
Claire had never opened it.
Rachel wrote during week six:
My loves,
I am alive.
If anyone tells you differently, ask to speak to me yourself.
Mom.
Ethan had to leave room after reading.
The children had spent weeks believing their mother dead while this envelope existed inside Claire’s possession.
Claire cried.
“I was going to give it to them.”
“When?”
“I don’t know.”
Exactly.
The documents also showed Rachel had gradually reconstructed timeline.
She noticed “Samuel Reed” never visited in person.
All communication came through Claire and video calls where camera was usually off.
St. Matthew staff did not recognize him.
Rachel requested identity verification.
That triggered internal review.
Before review finished, Claire removed Rachel.
Why had Claire brought documents too?
Because Rachel insisted.
Claire planned possibly confess.
Then saw dinner guests.
Panicked.
Locked Rachel behind wooden door.
Placed paperwork on coffee table while deciding.
Lily and Noah wandered from upstairs after hearing unfamiliar sounds.
They found envelopes.
Claire saw Lily holding letter from mother.
Fear took over.
She grabbed wooden clothes hanger from coat stand and ordered children put documents down and return upstairs.
Lily shielded Noah.
Then Ethan entered.
That reconstructed visible scene.
No hidden person had physically forced Claire.
Her misconduct was hers.
But documents held one line pointing beyond her.
Rachel’s appeal included:
THE MAN CALLING HIMSELF SAMUEL REED KNOWS THINGS I ONLY TOLD DR. HENRY VALE.
Henry Vale was Rachel’s neuropsychologist at Mercy General immediately after accident.
Real doctor.
Who had access to his notes?
Hospital.
Insurer.
Rachel’s authorized proxy.
And a company contracted to digitize discharge records.
Company:
Northfield Medical Data Services.
Same “Northfield” name?
Different entity.
But registered at same office suite as Northfield Patient Advocacy LLC.
Maya frowned.
Somebody built advocacy company to resemble legitimate medical vendor.
A social-engineering trick.
Who owned data vendor?
Bennett Health Systems.
Claire’s family company.
Claire froze.
“My brother runs that division.”
Ethan looked at her.
Claire had an older brother:
Marcus Bennett.
Forty-one.
Cybersecurity and health-record systems executive.
Claire whispered:
May you like
“Marcus knew Rachel was alive.”
And for first time since dinner began, she looked afraid of someone other than Ethan.
