Chapter 4 - The Accident
Rachel’s accident had seemed ordinary.
Three months earlier, her SUV was struck at an intersection by a delivery van that ran a red light.
The driver admitted distraction.
Dashcam confirmed.
No sabotage.
No intentional collision.
No hidden conspiracy behind the crash.
Rachel suffered spinal trauma, concussion and temporary memory impairment.
She was stabilized at Mercy General and transferred two days later to St. Matthew Rehabilitation Center.
Ethan was in London when it happened.
He flew home immediately.
But before he landed, he received message apparently from Rachel:
Please don’t come to St. Matthew’s yet. I’m overwhelmed. Claire is with me. Let her handle things for a few days.
He obeyed reluctantly.
Rachel said she never sent it.
The message came from her phone.
Who had phone at that moment?
Mercy General property records showed it was released to:
FAMILY REPRESENTATIVE — CLAIRE BENNETT.
Claire admitted sending message.
Her excuse stunned Ethan.
“Rachel asked me to.”
Rachel denied.
Claire insisted Rachel was lucid enough briefly and said Ethan would panic and interfere with doctors.
Was Claire lying?
Nurse records showed Rachel had moments of lucidity.
A nurse documented:
Patient requests cousin Claire contact spouse and ask him to delay visit until tomorrow.
So some request existed.
But only until tomorrow.
Claire transformed one-day delay into weeks.
Why?
Because the next day Claire received a phone call.
From a man identifying himself as Dr. Samuel Reed, a private neuropsychological consultant.
He told her Rachel’s recovery could be compromised by “family stress.”
He knew details from accident.
He knew Ethan and Rachel had argued before Ethan’s London trip.
They had.
About money?
No.
About Ethan considering selling the family’s old coastal house without consulting Rachel.
Normal marital conflict.
Samuel turned it into alleged coercion.
He told Claire Rachel had privately disclosed fear of Ethan.
Claire believed him.
Why?
Because Claire already disliked Ethan.
She thought he controlled Rachel.
She accepted a story that confirmed what she wanted to believe.
Then Samuel sent documents for temporary contact restriction.
Claire helped upload them.
Did she forge Rachel’s signature?
“No.”
“Who did?”
“I thought Rachel had signed before they came to me.”
Rachel had not.
Then investigators asked St. Matthew whether Dr. Samuel Reed worked there.
No.
He never had.
The name appeared only in documents Claire uploaded.
Phone number disconnected.
Professional license number belonged to Dr. Samuel Keene.
Different surname.
Retired neuropsychologist.
Never treated Rachel.
