Chapter 9 - Michael Bell’s Warning

Michael was arrested at bus station.
He confessed immediately to scoring glass.
Why?
He wanted reproduce visible straight line from 1998 maintenance photograph.
His grandfather Thomas had left documents suggesting first window break was deliberately weakened.
Michael believed forcing Victor to notice matching line would reopen Elena’s case.
“Why put Lily beneath it?”
“I didn’t.”
Claire did.
Coincidence?
Not entirely.
Michael knew Lily often played on sofa from surveillance photographs.
So he knowingly created risk.
He claimed scoring was shallow.
Engineer agreed his cut alone was unlikely to shatter pane immediately.
Still reckless criminal act.
Why hide cutter where Claire would find?
He wanted someone to discover.
Why photograph Elena taped beneath frame?
To connect incidents.
Why not simply mail evidence?
“I tried.”
Victor never received packages.
Who intercepted?
Unknown.
Michael became obsessed and escalated.
Anna’s suspicion was therefore accurate.
She recognized dangerous stress line.
Claire’s reaction to cutter was genuine.
Then who scheduled awning impact?
Michael denied.
Device logs supported him.
At 10:23, when command was programmed, Michael was on exterior garden camera near east wing.
Could he use remote?
Scheduled locally from Claire tablet inside house.
Someone else.
Who had tablet?
Michael said he saw a man remove it from Claire’s tote during charity dinner six days earlier.
Who?
He could not see face.
But silver ring flashed.
Henry Price’s old ring?
Henry lost it.
Where did it go?
He gave it to son.
Owen.
But Owen did not wear ring.
He said it was stolen from office months ago.
Police searched.
No ring.
Then Michael revealed grandfather’s archive.
Thomas believed Elena’s death was accidental.
That surprised Victor.
“What?”
Thomas investigated.
Elena climbed onto balcony bench trying to retrieve paper blown outside.
She fell.
No evidence anyone pushed her.
Victor’s chest tightened.
So current saboteur might be exploiting tragic accident.
What did Thomas “protect wrong person” mean?
Not killer.
Foundation records.
After Elena found pink-room archive, Thomas discovered unauthorized foster-placement approvals.
He blamed Rosa Reyes.
Anna’s mother.
Rosa was innocent.
Thomas concealed evidence implicating someone else because he feared scandal.
Who?
Margaret Bennett.
Victor’s late wife.
Margaret had bypassed approvals to place children quickly in emergencies.
Protective intent.
Improper process.
No evidence children harmed.
Thomas hid it to protect Bennett name and let Rosa leave under cloud of suspicion.
That was his unforgivable mistake.
Anna cried when she learned.
Her mother had carried suspicion silently.
But how did that connect current awning?
Michael said he wanted expose Margaret’s paperwork and clear Rosa.
He did not want Lily injured.
Someone hijacked stunt.
Then police recovered deleted footage from backup.
At 10:24, after Claire and Anna left patio—
another person entered sunroom.
Dark jacket.
Silver ring.
He picked up Claire’s tablet.
Programmed awning.
Looked directly at camera.
Face became visible.
May you like
Victor stared.
“Owen.”
