Chapter 7 - The Silver Ring

Old photographs from 1998 showed Henry Price wearing large silver signet ring.
Owen’s father.
Was Henry the man Elena saw?
Daniel examined photo.
“I think so.”
But Henry was security employee.
Seeing him outside window would be normal.
Why would Elena fear him?
Then police found Henry.
He was eighty-one.
Alive in assisted living.
Memory intact.
He admitted being outside sunroom during first glass incident.
“I was inspecting frame.”
“Before it cracked?”
“After.”
“Did Elena call you silver hands?”
Henry laughed sadly.
“She called my ring silver hand.”
He showed empty finger.
Ring lost years ago.
Did Henry cause glass break?
“No.”
Did Thomas Bell?
“No.”
Who?
Henry believed construction defect.
Then why leave day after Elena died?
Margaret fired him.
Why?
Because he failed to preserve security tape from balcony.
Tape was overwritten.
Accident?
Henry claimed yes.
Margaret believed negligence.
No murder cover-up proven.
Then Henry revealed:
“Elena’s fall wasn’t why Margaret was afraid.”
“What was?”
“Something Elena found.”
Two weeks between glass break and death, Elena repeatedly talked about “pink room under garden.”
No such room.
Adults assumed imagination.
Rosa did not.
She followed Elena one afternoon.
Found service hatch beneath patio.
Inside old utility chamber painted faded rose color.
What was there?
Boxes.
Documents.
Photographs.
Belonging to Bennett Foundation.
Thomas sealed chamber after.
Why?
Water damage.
Could Elena’s balcony death relate?
Henry never knew.
Then Victor inspected patio.
Renovations covered hatch decades ago.
Ground scanner found cavity.
Inside:
rotted boxes.
No bodies.
No sinister chamber.
Just archival storage abandoned during 1990s renovation.
Documents included charity foster-family records.
Bennett Foundation once funded temporary child placements.
Victor knew generally.
Then one file bore Elena’s handwriting in crayon:
I SAW CLAIRE HERE.
Everyone stared.
Claire was thirty-five.
In 1998 she would have been seven.
Did she know Bennett family then?
She always claimed she first met Daniel twelve years ago through charity board.
Victor confronted her.
Claire went silent.
“You were here?”
“I don’t remember.”
“That’s not answer.”
She began crying.
“My name wasn’t Claire then.”
Victor froze.
“What?”
“My childhood name was Caroline.”
Not secret blood relation.
Not hidden daughter.
Claire had spent several months in Bennett Foundation emergency placement program at age seven after mother hospitalized.
One placement site was property adjacent to mansion.
Did she meet Elena?
Possibly.
Claire remembered a girl with pink bows.
But not name.
Then Victor understood her collapse after seeing camera.
Not because she feared current sabotage being recorded.
Because camera awakened memory?
Claire clarified.
“When Lily pointed at it, I remembered another camera.”
A large old security camera near garden in 1998.
“And?”
“I remembered Elena saying she was going to show me something Thomas hid.”
“What?”
Claire looked toward sealed garden chamber.
“A photograph.”
“Of what?”
“I don’t remember.”
But excavators found child-sized envelope.
Written:
FOR CAROLINE.

Inside was empty.
Whatever Elena wanted Claire to see had been removed.
