Chapter 8 - Caroline
Claire had not deliberately hidden childhood identity from Victor.
Her legal name changed from Caroline Mason to Claire Morgan after mother remarried.
Daniel knew she had been Caroline.
He did not know she once stayed in Bennett Foundation placement.
Records were confidential.
Claire herself remembered little.
Why?
Not amnesia conspiracy.
She was seven.
Placement lasted eleven weeks during family crisis.
Twenty-eight years had passed.
But current events triggered fragments.
Elena.
Pink bows.
Sunroom.
Old camera.
Silver ring.
A photograph.
Then Claire remembered:
“Elena said somebody kept putting children in wrong houses.”
Victor frowned.
Bennett Foundation funded emergency foster placements.
In 1998 there had been administrative scandal.
Several children assigned to homes without complete second-level authorization.
No known abuse.
Foundation corrected procedures.
Victor had been overseas much of year.
Margaret handled board.
Thomas Bell managed logistics.
Could Elena have overheard adults?
Likely.
Why would anyone sabotage window over records?
Maybe current sabotage was designed to recreate 1998 event and force Victor investigate old foundation.
Not necessarily intended to kill Lily.
Engineer tested scoring.
Pre-cut line plus awning impact could shatter pane unpredictably.
Whoever did it risked severe injury.
Even if “warning,” reckless.
Then police found tool residue.
Glass cutter carried microscopic compound used in current mansion maintenance workshop.
That meant it had been taken recently.
Anna’s marked cutter.
Who accessed workshop?
Staff logs.
Owen Price.
Anna.
Groundskeeper.
Claire once with contractor.
And a temporary glazier named:
Michael Bell.
Bell.
Thomas Bell’s grandson.
Thirty-three.
Hired two weeks earlier to inspect window seals.
Nobody had noticed surname significance.
Victor called company.
Michael Bell had no employment record there.
He used forged contractor badge.
Now they had likely suspect.
Police located apartment.
Empty.
Inside:
photographs of mansion.
Lily.
Anna.
Claire.
Victor.
Window diagrams.
A duplicate security badge.
And old photograph of Elena beside seven-year-old Caroline.
Claire stared.
“That’s the photograph.”
“What?”
“Elena showed me this.”
Back contained list of numbers.
Not names.
Placement IDs.
One circled:
C-17 — CAROLINE MASON.
Why did Thomas Bell’s grandson possess it?
Then Victor found letter from Thomas to Michael:
Your grandfather made one unforgivable mistake at Bennett House.
I protected the wrong person.
But Thomas was Michael’s grandfather, so letter maybe from grandmother? Better document: cassette transcript Thomas left. It read:
I made one unforgivable mistake at Bennett House. I protected the wrong person.
Michael had been investigating.
Could he have staged current break to force truth?
Search history:
tempered glass controlled break.
awning override.
camera blind spots.
Yes.
But where was Michael?
Then Lily’s doll was examined because child said “camera man touched Dolly.”
Inside doll’s dress pocket:
tiny memory card.
Michael had slipped it there.
Video file.
Recorded morning of sabotage.
Michael speaking:
“If Victor sees this, I failed.”
Then:
“I cut the glass.”
Claire gasped.
Case solved?
Not yet.
Michael continued:
May you like
“But I did not schedule the awning.”
Someone else turned his reckless warning into potentially lethal event.
