Chapter 13 - What Happened at 10:23
Investigators reconstructed accident morning minute by minute.
9:50 a.m.
Owen arrived to calibrate security cameras.
He knew Claire’s tablet was missing because he had taken it from her tote six days earlier.
Why?
He wanted administrator access to test old Margaret account without asking Daniel.
Improper.
He intended return.
Then Michael Bell entered property using forged glazier credentials.
10:11.
Michael went outside west sunroom.
He used Anna’s stolen yellow cutter to score straight line near glass edge.
He taped Elena photograph beneath frame.
Purpose:
Recreate visual clue from 1998 and force Victor to investigate Thomas archive.
He believed cut shallow enough not to cause failure.
Still dangerously reckless.
10:17.
Claire found photograph and cutter.
Anna joined.
They discussed Rosa’s old warning.
Claire became frightened.
10:21.
Claire picked up cutter.
Anna urged her tell Victor.
Claire refused until she understood Elena connection.
10:23.
Owen entered.
Claire and Anna had moved toward patio.
Owen took Claire’s tablet.
Programmed awning retraction for 10:30 intending catch Michael near pane and frighten him into admitting tampering.
He believed limiter functional.
It was not.
10:26.
Claire deleted footage showing herself with cutter and photograph.
She feared implication.
That deletion later looked like guilt.
10:30.
Owen canceled immediate awning action after Michael moved away.
He forgot scheduled command remained in system? But later Daniel changes. Need consistent: Owen had scheduled 10:30, then perhaps delayed/canceled? Earlier logs original 10:30 edited 11:48 to 14:12. Fine.
11:48.
Daniel secretly returned mansion.
He had discovered Michael’s identity through security alert.
He accessed terminal.
Saw scheduled 10:30 command had failed because smart system queued after temporary network interruption.
He changed execution to 2:12.
Why?
Normal family schedule showed sunroom empty from 2–3 while Lily napped and Claire took call.
Daniel wanted pane to crack while Michael’s scoring remained visible, then confront him with physical evidence.
He assumed newly renovated pane was safety-laminated and would spiderweb rather than rain shards.
He was wrong.
Contractor had installed cheaper tempered panel contrary to specification.

Lily skipped nap.
Claire brought her into sunroom.

Anna saw stress line.
2:07.
She sought Victor.
Claire said she would move Lily.
2:09.
Anonymous call arrived.
“If you move Lily, you’ll never learn what happened to Elena.”
Who called?
Michael.
He admitted.
He wanted Claire to remain near scene long enough to discover clue.
He claimed he meant Claire, not Lily.
But wording caused Claire to hesitate.
2:11.
Anna returned.
Saw Lily still there.
2:12.
Awning command executed.
Limiter failed.
Frame jolted.
Scored tempered glass shattered.
Anna reacted.
Lily received small scratch from Anna’s bracelet during rescue.
Every visual detail now fit.
Except one.
Why did Michael know Claire was Caroline Mason?
Thomas archive.
Why choose Claire as recipient?
Because Elena’s envelope was addressed FOR CAROLINE.
Michael believed Claire deserved truth his grandfather suppressed.
Why target Victor through Lily?
He insisted he did not intend Lily present.
But he surveilled family enough to know she often sat there.
His denial did not erase risk.
Then Victor asked:
“Was the glass in 1998 deliberately cut?”
Michael did not know.
Thomas’s photograph showed straight line.
Engineer reexamined archived maintenance photo.
The 1998 line was not glass-cutter score.
It was manufacturing edge defect.
So Michael had recreated something he misunderstood.
First window break likely accident.
That was devastatingly ordinary.
Then Victor whispered:
“And Elena?”
Her balcony death had already been reconstructed as accident.
So no murderer behind old tragedy.
Michael had endangered Lily chasing a murder that never happened.
But Thomas archive still contained real wrongdoing—
placement Number 12.
That mystery was separate.
And someone had forged Victor’s initials.
