Chapter 6 - The Silent Accusation

The next morning, the rain had cleared, leaving the sky a pale, washed-out gray.

Inside the mansion’s sunlit dining room, an official from Child Protective Services, Ms. Evelyn Vance, sat across from Ethan at the long mahogany table. Across the room, Grandmother sat quietly on a loveseat, her hands folded tightly in her lap, her eyes fixed on the floor. A legal representative provided by the family sat beside her.

“Mr. Sterling,” Ms. Vance said, reviewing her notes. “Your son Noah gave a very detailed statement to our officer yesterday. He claims his grandmother pulled his sister’s feet while she was on the balcony ledge.”

“That is correct,” Ethan said, his voice hard. “And my mother has a history of cognitive decline and frustration due to her speech aphasia.”

Grandmother’s head snapped up. She shook her head violently, her eyes filling with tears as she looked at Ms. Vance, gesturing toward her own head to indicate her mind was completely clear.

Ms. Vance turned to Grandmother. “Mrs. Sterling, we understand you cannot speak. But your lawyer has provided a written statement claiming you saw Noah push his sister.”

Ethan let out a bitter, disbelieving laugh. “A written statement? She can barely hold a pen with her right hand! Someone wrote that for her!”

“I wrote it, Mr. Sterling,” the family lawyer spoke up quietly. “Using a picture-board communication system. Your mother selected the symbols for 'Boy', 'Pull', and 'Fall' repeatedly.”

Ethan leaned over the table, his muscular frame tense. “My son is nine years old! He loved his sister! Why would he pull her off a balcony?!”

“Children often react unpredictably under stress or jealousy, Mr. Sterling,” Ms. Vance noted neutrally. “However, given the conflicting accounts and the severe nature of the injury, we are required to temporarily restrict your mother’s access to the home pending a full psychological evaluation.”

Grandmother buried her face in her trembling hands, her shoulders shaking with silent sobs.

From the hallway archway, Noah watched the scene through the wooden slats of the door, a calm, unbothered expression on his young face as he slowly ate an apple.
