Chapter 1 - The Echo in the Courtyard

“DADDY!”

Lily’s sharp, terrified cry sliced through the quiet afternoon air of the Sterling estate, echoing off the stone walls surrounding the poolside courtyard.

For a split second, nine-year-old Noah stood at the edge of the second-floor stone balcony, his brown hair ruffled by the gentle breeze. He had just grabbed his five-year-old sister’s feet and pulled as she sat playing on the broad ledge. Her tiny body lost balance instantly, tipping backward over the railing into the empty air.

Behind Noah, seventy-five-year-old Grandmother rushed toward the balustrade, her face twisted in a silent scream. Her silver-blonde hair caught the bright daylight as her hands lunged forward, grasping at air, but she was too late. Unable to form words due to a stroke years prior, her open mouth let out only a raspy, helpless gasp.

Below, in the manicured courtyard, the pale-pink dress fluttered as Lily fell toward the cream paving blocks near the pool. A dull, sickening thud echoed across the open space, followed by total silence.

Lily lay motionless on the stone ground, her golden curls spread across the light paving, her bright-blue eyes closed tight.

Noah didn't pause to look down with remorse. Instead, he spun on his heel and bounded down the nearby stone exterior stairs, his face instantly twisting into a picture of frantic, sobbing horror as he ran toward his motionless sister.

“DAD! HELP!” Noah screamed at the top of his lungs, his voice ringing with pure panic.

Behind him, Grandmother scrambled down the stairs as fast as her fragile legs could carry her, tears streaming down her wrinkled cheeks, her trembling hands gesturing frantically toward the sky.
