Chapter 10 - The Reckoning at the Cottage

Thirty minutes later, headlights cut through the thick darkness of the oak-lined driveway leading to the small guest cottage at the edge of the estate grounds.

Ethan pulled the SUV to a stop. He stepped out into the damp night air, his heart heavy as lead, his chest aching with a profound, unbearable guilt.

He walked up the wooden porch steps and knocked softly on the door.

A moment later, the door opened. Grandmother stood in the doorway, dressed in a simple cotton robe, her silver hair loose over her shoulders. She looked tired, aged by years in a matter of days, her gentle blue eyes filled with a quiet, lingering sadness.

Ethan stood before her, his head bowed, tears streaming down his strong square jaw.

“Mom…” Ethan choked out, his voice breaking completely. “I’m sorry. My God, Mom… I’m so sorry.”

Grandmother looked at her son. She didn't shake her head in anger. She didn't wave him away.

She stepped forward, wrapped her frail arms around his broad waist, and rested her head against his chest. Ethan dropped to his knees on the wooden porch, burying his face in his mother’s shoulder, sobbing like a child as he held her tight.

She patted his back gently, her silent tears soaking into his collar, offering him the unconditional forgiveness only a mother could give.

When Ethan finally pulled back, wiping his eyes, his expression turned deadly serious.

“I know the truth, Mom,” Ethan whispered. “I saw the security footage. Noah unlocked the doors. He pulled her.”

Grandmother’s eyes widened with a mix of relief that the truth was out and profound sorrow for what lay ahead. She raised her hand, miming a lock turning, then touched Ethan’s heart, giving him a look of deep concern.

“I’m taking care of it tonight,” Ethan vowed softly. “He needs help. Professional help. I won't let him hurt you or Lily ever again.”
