Chapter 4 - The Hospital Corridor

The sterile scent of antiseptic hung heavy in the private waiting wing of Saint Jude Medical Center. The rhythmic, dull hum of heart monitors echoed through the polished hallway as bright fluorescent lights reflected off the linoleum floor.

Ethan sat on a hard vinyl chair outside Trauma Room 4, his elbows resting on his knees, his face buried in his hands. His navy polo shirt was rumpled, and a smudge of dirt from the courtyard garden stained his beige trousers.

The heavy door opened, and a doctor in blue scrubs stepped out, pulling down his mask.

Ethan bolted upright. “How is she? How is my daughter?”

“She has a severe concussion and a fractured collarbone, Mr. Sterling,” the doctor reported calmly, checking a digital tablet. “The fall was cushioned somewhat by the thick hedge near the paving, which saved her life. But she hasn't regained consciousness yet. We need to monitor her for internal swelling over the next twelve hours.”

Ethan let out a long, ragged breath, resting his forehead against the cool wall. “Thank God. Can I see her?”

“Only for a few minutes,” the doctor nodded. “She needs absolute quiet.”

As Ethan stepped toward the room, he turned back to look at Noah, who was sitting quietly on a bench down the hall, swinging his legs while holding a plush teddy bear he had brought from home.

“Stay here, Noah,” Ethan said softly, his voice full of warmth for his son. “I’ll be right back.”

Noah looked up, putting on a sad, innocent smile. “Is Lily going to be okay, Daddy?”

“She’s going to make it, buddy,” Ethan promised, touching Noah’s head before entering the room.

The moment the heavy door clicked shut, Noah’s smile vanished. He turned his head toward the elevator at the end of the hall, where Grandmother was standing in the shadows, accompanied by a hospital social worker.

Noah held her gaze from across the long corridor, his round blue eyes entirely devoid of childlike warmth. He leaned back against the wall, reached into his gray trouser pocket, and pulled out a small, metallic object—a silver charm shaped like a rose that had belonged to Lily’s pink ribbon.

He twirled it between his fingers, flashing a cold, knowing smirk at the silent witness who couldn't expose him.
