Chapter 2 - Emma’s Password

Ethan did not accuse her immediately.
That was the first difference.
He looked at the screen.
Then at Emma.
“Did you delete it?”
NO.
“Does anyone know your password?”
NO.
Emma hesitated.
Then corrected herself.
MAYBE.
Ethan frowned.
“Who?”
Emma signed:
YOU.
Ethan nodded.
He knew it.
Then another memory struck her.
She signed:
ELEANOR → WATCHED → ONCE.
“When?”
Emma mimed typing.
Months earlier Eleanor had stood behind her while Emma entered the code to retrieve footage of Sophie taking her first steps near the kitchen.
Could Eleanor remember it?
Possible.
But the access system required more than a password.
Ethan called the security company.
The technician explained that manual deletion required password plus facial verification from the registered user.
Ethan looked at Emma.
“That means the system saw your face.”
Emma felt cold.
She had been nowhere near the security terminal.
They pulled the terminal camera.
At 7:14 p.m., someone stood before it.
Cream knit dress.
Long brunette hair.
Emma’s height.
The face was turned partly away.
Then the woman looked toward the scanner.
Emma’s face appeared for less than one second.
Verification accepted.
Emma stared.
It looked like her.
Ethan stared too.
“What were you doing at 7:14?”
Emma pointed upstairs.
SHOWER.
“You were alone?”
YES.
No witness.
Ethan’s suspicion returned.
Emma could see him fighting it.
Then Sophie began crying again.
Emma reached automatically.
Ethan hesitated.
That hesitation broke something inside her.
She lowered her hands.
He saw.
Regret flooded his face.
“Emma…”
She walked away.
That night she slept in the guest room.
Not because Ethan asked her to.
Because she could not bear to lie beside the man who had struck her before giving her thirty seconds to explain.
At 2:11 a.m., the door opened.
Emma sat upright.
Ethan stood there.
He did not enter.
“I checked the raw access logs.”
Emma waited.
“The video wasn't deleted from inside the house.”
Her brows drew together.
Ethan held up his laptop.
Someone had remotely connected to the security system and created a local session under Emma’s profile.
The facial verification clip had been uploaded rather than captured live.
A spoof.
Emma signed:
MY → FACE → FROM WHERE?
“I don't know.”
Then Ethan looked ashamed.
“I should have believed you.”
Emma's eyes hardened.
He moved closer.
“I was scared for Sophie.”
Emma immediately signed:
SO → WAS → I.
“I know.”
NO.
Her hands became sharper.
YOU → DIDN’T → KNOW.
Ethan absorbed it.
Emma pointed at her cheek.
Then toward the nursery.
YOU → HIT → ME.
He lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
She signed:
BECAUSE → I → COULDN’T → SPEAK → FAST.
Ethan looked up.
That sentence landed.
Eleanor’s accusation had required seconds.
Emma’s defense required someone willing to watch her hands.
Ethan had not.
“I was wrong.”
Emma’s eyes filled again.
But she did not comfort him.
Forgiveness was not something he could demand because guilt hurt.
She pointed toward the laptop.
FIND → WHO.
They began together.
The forged facial-verification image had been extracted from a video.
Emma recognized the clothing.
Her cream dress.
The kitchen.
Three weeks earlier.
Someone had used mansion footage to construct the fake authentication.
Who could access archived security footage?
Ethan.
Emma.
The security administrator.
And Eleanor.
Ethan’s face tightened.
Then he checked Eleanor’s account.
Nothing.
No suspicious logins.
No exports.
No deletions.
Her account had not touched the system in months.
The obvious suspect seemed clear—
and immediately became less clear.
At breakfast, Ethan confronted Eleanor.
She denied everything.
“Why would I need to erase footage?”
“To hide what you did to Sophie.”
Eleanor looked genuinely insulted.
“I tipped milk on her bib because she wouldn't take the bottle.”
“You accused Emma of hurting her.”
“I saw Emma holding a screaming baby covered in milk.”
“You said you saw her hurting Sophie.”
Eleanor paused.
A small but important difference.
“What exactly did you see?” Ethan asked.
Eleanor's answer changed.
“I heard Sophie screaming. I entered. Emma had her.”
“That isn't what you told me.”
“I panicked.”
Emma watched.
Eleanor was lying about something.
But perhaps not everything.
Then Ethan asked:
“How did you know the doctors called Emma mute?”
Eleanor went still.
Emma’s eyes locked on her.
Ethan had noticed too.
“Who told you?”
Eleanor touched her pearls.
“I heard Dr. Mercer say it.”
Emma immediately shook her head.
Dr. Mercer had never visited the mansion.
Ethan knew that.
“Where?”
“At the hospital.”
“When?”
Eleanor's composure finally cracked.
“I don't remember.”
Emma signed:
LIAR.
Eleanor looked at her.
For a moment the elegant mask vanished.
Then she whispered:
“You really want to know?”
Emma nodded.
Eleanor walked to the marble island.
Opened her handbag.
Removed a small white envelope.
Inside was a medical report.
Emma recognized the hospital logo.
Her own neurological assessment.
CONFIDENTIAL.
Ethan grabbed it.
“How did you get this?”
Eleanor answered:
“It was sent to me.”
“By whom?”
“No name.”
The report contained details even Ethan had not seen.
Including one sentence underlined in red:
PATIENT’S APHONIA MAY NOT BE SPONTANEOUS.
Emma stopped breathing.
May you like
Below it, someone had handwritten:
ASK WHAT SHE DRANK THE NIGHT BEFORE SHE LOST HER VOICE.
