Chapter 14 - The Answer Emma Refused to Chase

Emma did not move.

That saved her.

Rebecca expected pursuit.

Police entered instead.

A pressure sensor in the laboratory corridor triggered.

Doors locked.

Gas began releasing into the room.

Not lethal.

Sedative.

Rebecca had planned to isolate Emma.

Officers retreated.

Ventilation activated.

Rebecca became trapped by her own mechanism.

She surrendered twenty minutes later.

The injector was recovered.

It contained Daniel’s personalized treatment.

Or so Rebecca claimed.

Emma wanted it.

That was the hardest truth.

She wanted to speak Sophie’s name.

Wanted to tell Ethan exactly how deeply he had hurt her without translating pain through hands.

Wanted to laugh audibly.

Wanted to sing badly in the kitchen.

Wanted to hear “Mommy” answered with her own voice.

Rebecca knew.

That was why the injector was more powerful than a gun.

Claire tested it.

The formulation was legitimate.

Rebecca had actually completed Daniel’s therapy.

Preliminary laboratory evidence suggested it might help.

But it had never undergone adequate human trials.

Emma could choose medically supervised experimental treatment later.

Not today.

Not as Rebecca’s proof.

Emma refused the immediate injection.

Rebecca finally lost composure.

“You don't understand what you're throwing away.”

Emma signed slowly.

Claire translated.

“She says: ‘My voice is mine. You don't get to decide when I use my body to prove you right.’”

Rebecca stared.

For the first time, silence defeated her.

Police arrested her.

Laura accepted a plea agreement and cooperated.

Charlotte faced charges related to unlawful entry and conspiracy but evidence showed she had repeatedly attempted, inconsistently and too late, to restrain Laura.

Eleanor was not charged in the poisoning scheme.

She had not poisoned Emma.

She had not planned Laura’s intrusion.

She had not deleted the security footage.

But none of that erased the kitchen.

Eleanor had mistreated Sophie.

She had falsely accused Emma.

She had exploited Emma’s inability to speak quickly.

She had physically grabbed her.

Those acts remained hers.

Ethan did not allow the larger conspiracy to swallow the smaller betrayal.

Neither did Emma.

Then came Isabelle.

Rebecca’s file was tested.

Authentic records.

Charlotte had indeed entered Eleanor’s home the night Isabelle died.

But she had not killed the baby.

A neighbor saw Charlotte leave forty minutes before Isabelle’s death.

Medical review of preserved pathology slides supported the original finding.

No evidence of suffocation.

No poison.

No trauma.

Isabelle most likely died suddenly from an undiagnosed cardiac conduction abnormality.

The same broad hereditary family of electrical disorders later found in Daniel’s line.

Charlotte had carried the mutation.

Isabelle may have inherited it through the maternal family.

Eleanor had spent decades fearing her sister killed her child.

Charlotte had spent decades knowing Eleanor suspected her.

Neither asked.

Neither trusted.

Both built identities around an unanswered question.

Eleanor sat with the result for a long time.

“So Charlotte didn't kill her.”

“No,” Ethan said.

“And I hated her for thirty-nine years.”

Emma watched.

Eleanor whispered:

“I wasted my entire life.”

Emma signed:

NOT → ENTIRE.

Eleanor looked up.

Emma pointed toward Sophie.

THERE → IS → STILL → AFTER.

Not forgiveness.

Not reconciliation.

Possibility.

Eleanor cried.

Later Claire presented Emma with legitimate options for experimental treatment.

No promises.

No miraculous certainty.

The safest protocol would take months.

Emma agreed.

On her terms.

Ethan drove her home.

At the mansion entrance he stopped.

“I've been thinking about what Rebecca did.”

Emma waited.

“She kept exploiting everyone’s need to know something immediately.”

Emma nodded.

“And I did the same thing in the kitchen.”

Her expression changed.

“I saw Sophie crying. Mom accused you. I wanted certainty immediately.”

He looked down.

“So I chose the easiest story.”

Emma signed:

AND → HIT → ME.

“Yes.”

He did not soften it.

“I don't know whether you'll ever trust me the same way.”

Emma thought.

Then:

NOT → SAME.

His face fell.

She continued.

MAYBE → DIFFERENT.

He looked at her.

BETTER → IF → EARNED.

Ethan’s eyes filled.

He nodded.

Then Sophie began babbling from the back seat.

Emma turned.

Sophie stretched both hands toward her.

“Mama.”

Emma smiled.

Her throat moved instinctively.

Nothing intelligible came.

Only:

“Mm—”

Sophie smiled anyway.

She understood.

Emma lifted her.

Then Emma noticed something tucked beneath Sophie’s blanket.

A photograph.

Old.

No one had put it there.

At least no one admitted it.

The photograph showed Eleanor and Charlotte as young women.

Between them stood a man.

Daniel Mercer.

Except Daniel would have been only a child when the photograph was taken.

Emma turned it over.

A name was written on the back.

DAVID MERCER.

Ethan frowned.

“Daniel’s adoptive father.”

Below the name was another sentence:

ASK ELEANOR WHICH SISTER HE LOVED.

Emma looked toward the mansion.

Rebecca was in custody.

Laura was in custody.

Charlotte was under supervision.

Yet someone had placed this photograph inside Sophie’s blanket.

The story was not entirely finished.

And this time—

Emma would not decide what it meant before verifying who put it there.
