Chapter 11 - Daniel’s Letters

Daniel wrote Emma every birthday.
Twenty letters.
Never delivered.
Rebecca kept them.
Claire had not known.
The first was written when Emma was thirteen.
I don't know whether entering your life would help you or satisfy me. Those are not the same thing.
At sixteen:
I saw your school photograph today. I hope someday you forgive me for watching from a distance.
At twenty-one:
I asked your mother whether I could tell you. She said no. I am trying to respect the life she built for you.
Emma stopped.
Her mother.
Margaret.
Margaret knew Daniel was her biological father.
Emma called her.
Margaret confessed.
The fertility clinic contacted her years after Emma’s birth.
The embryo had not been anonymously donated as documented.
A record error occurred.
Daniel Mercer’s genetic material had been used.
The egg donor was anonymous.
Daniel was legally notified.
He wanted contact.
Margaret refused.
Why?
Fear.
Emma already had a father who loved her.
Margaret feared Daniel’s wealth and influence would fracture the family.
Daniel accepted the boundary.
Rebecca did not create that separation.
Another accusation partly collapsed.
But she exploited it later.
After Margaret’s husband died, Daniel planned to approach Emma as an adult.
Rebecca convinced him Emma knew and had rejected him.
She forged an email.
Emma supposedly wrote:
I know who you are. Stay out of my life.
Daniel believed it.
He stopped trying.
Emma cried silently while reading the forged message.
Rebecca had not created every wound.
She had inserted herself into existing ones.
That made her more effective.
Then Ethan discovered why.
Daniel had planned to remove Rebecca from his research foundation.
He suspected she falsified trial data.
Rebecca needed him isolated.
Claire was already suspicious of her.
Emma, if discovered, would create another heir and another person capable of challenging her.
Daniel died before completing the removal.
Official cause:
heart attack.
Natural.
Claire had never questioned it.
Now she did.
Daniel’s stored autopsy samples were retested.
No poison.
No evidence Rebecca caused his death.
The tempting murder theory failed.
Daniel simply died.
But Rebecca used his death immediately.
She altered trust documents.
Diverted research licensing.
Built her hidden business.
Years later Emma’s genetic profile entered a hospital database during pregnancy.
A family-match algorithm flagged Mercer markers.
Rebecca learned Daniel’s hidden daughter was Emma Whitmore.
Then she saw Eleanor’s name.
A perfect coincidence.
Rebecca knew the Hale history.
Knew Charlotte hated Eleanor.
Knew Laura had inherited that resentment.
She connected them.
Laura became her instrument.
Charlotte became emotional cover.
Eleanor became the obvious villain.
Emma became the experiment.
And Ethan—
became the weapon Rebecca never had to touch.
Emma looked at him.
He understood.
Rebecca had created a scene where a frightened father would see a crying baby, a voiceless wife and a persuasive older woman.
But Rebecca had not made him slap Emma.
He had done that.
Ethan said quietly:
“She predicted me.”
Emma signed:
YES.
He looked devastated.
Then:
I → DIDN’T.
He frowned.
She pointed to herself.
YOU → THOUGHT → I → COULDN’T → DEFEND → MYSELF.
Then she raised her hands.
BUT → I → CAN.
For the first time since losing speech, Emma smiled.
Small.
Sad.
But real.
Rebecca had misunderstood the person at the center of her plan.
Emma did not need a voice to investigate.
She needed people willing to listen.
Then Laura gave police the address Rebecca used.
An abandoned Mercer research property.
They searched it.
Rebecca was gone.
But inside was a laboratory.
Emma’s photographs covered one wall.
Sophie’s covered another.
And beside them was a handwritten timeline.
At the bottom:
PHASE THREE — ETHAN REMOVES EMMA HIMSELF.
Ethan stared.
“What does that mean?”
A detective opened a nearby file.
Inside were divorce papers.
Custody documents.
Psychiatric evaluations.
All forged.
Rebecca had planned to make Ethan believe Emma was dangerous enough to lose custody of Sophie.
The kitchen incident had only been the first step.

And according to the timeline—
Phase Three had already begun.
