Chapter 10 - Why Emma Couldn’t Speak

Daniel’s compound targeted a rare neurological disorder.
One that caused progressive loss of voluntary speech.
The experimental treatment was intended to restore laryngeal motor control.
In healthy subjects it should have done almost nothing.
So why did Emma lose her voice after exposure?
Claire found the answer in Emma’s genetic sequencing.
Emma had the disorder.
Latent.
Inherited through Daniel.
The compound did not cause her aphonia.
It destabilized a condition already beginning.
Emma remembered subtle symptoms.
Hoarseness.
Difficulty sustaining certain sounds.
Fatigue after speaking.
She had dismissed them.
The compound accelerated a process that might otherwise have emerged months or years later.
Laura had harmed her.
But not in the way everyone assumed.
Another conclusion corrected.
Could Emma recover?
Claire would not promise.
“There are treatment pathways.”
Emma’s eyes filled.
Not certainty.
Possibility.
Enough.
Then Claire revealed the darker part.
Laura knew Emma carried the mutation.
How?
Daniel’s files.
Someone had given them to her.
Claire denied doing it.
Charlotte denied having them.
Nathan Vale had controlled the archive.
Dead before the theft.
Who else knew?
Daniel’s old research assistant.
A name appeared repeatedly:
Dr. Rebecca Hale.
Everyone froze.
Rebecca.
Charlotte’s acknowledged daughter.
The woman supposedly killed in the car crash.
Rebecca had worked with Daniel without publicly acknowledging they were half-siblings.
She knew the research.
She knew the compound.
She knew Emma existed.
And DNA had identified Rebecca as the crash victim.
Unless the body was someone else in the same maternal line.
Not identical.
But close enough to fool a limited comparison if investigators compared only to Charlotte.
They reopened the death investigation.
The body was exhumed.
Full genomic testing.
Not Rebecca.
Rose.
The hidden twin.
Rose had not died of cancer five years earlier.
That death certificate belonged to someone else under her adopted identity.
Rose and Rebecca had switched identities repeatedly.
Why?
To protect Rebecca from prosecution after an unrelated research ethics investigation.
The family history was no longer a line.
It was a knot.
Rebecca was alive.
And if she had been directing Laura—
then Laura was not the mastermind.
Police traced old research payments.
Rebecca had been financing Laura for two years.
Laura believed she was working with “Aunt Rose.”
She did not know the woman was Rebecca.
Why would Rebecca target Emma?
Daniel’s will.
Not the money.
Control of the research trust.
If Emma was confirmed as Daniel’s daughter, Claire and Emma together could remove Rebecca’s access to Mercer research licenses.
Rebecca had spent years secretly commercializing derivatives through shell companies.
Emma’s existence threatened everything.
Now motive became concrete.
But why involve Eleanor?
Because Eleanor was perfect camouflage.
Cruel enough to be believable.
Secretive enough to hide contact.
Guilty enough of old family manipulation that every new clue against her felt plausible.
Rebecca weaponized Eleanor’s character.
The realization devastated Eleanor when Ethan told her.
“She knew exactly what I'd do.”
Emma signed:
NO.
Everyone looked at her.
She repeated:
SHE → KNEW → WHAT → YOU → MIGHT → DO.
Then pointed at Eleanor.
YOU → CHOSE.
Eleanor lowered her head.
“Yes.”
That distinction mattered.
Rebecca could manipulate circumstances.
She could not own Eleanor’s decisions.
Or Ethan’s.
Ethan looked at Emma’s cheek although the mark had faded.
He understood the same lesson applied to him.
Then police located Laura.
Not hiding.
Hospitalized.
She had been found unconscious in a motel.
Toxicology showed the same experimental compound—
at a much higher concentration.
Laura survived.
When she woke, she asked for Emma.
Emma visited with Ethan.
Laura looked nothing like a mastermind now.
Just exhausted.
Terrified.
“I didn't know what Rebecca was doing.”
Emma waited.
Laura began crying.
“She told me the dose was harmless.”
Emma signed:
YOU → PUT → IT → IN → MY → GLASS.
“Yes.”
YOU → ENTERED → SOPHIE’S → ROOM.
“Yes.”
YOU → FRAMED → ELEANOR.
Laura closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
No excuses erased those choices.
Then Emma asked:
WHY → YOU → POISONED?
Laura looked at the doorway.
“Because I found out Rebecca lied.”
“About what?”
“She said your father abandoned us.”
Emma frowned.
Laura whispered:
“Daniel didn't abandon anyone.”
Then she looked directly at Emma.
May you like
“He was trying to find you.”
And Rebecca had spent twenty years making sure he never did.
