Chapter 9 - The empty grave

Jonathan Blackwood had never been buried.

The coffin contained weighted concrete.

Caleb had attended the funeral.

Victoria had cried beside him.

Khloe had held his hand.

I had stood behind them.

Another performance.

Police reopened Jonathan’s death investigation.

No verified body had ever been independently identified.

Victoria handled everything.

If Jonathan helped my mother escape seven years earlier, perhaps he disappeared later for the same reason.

Maybe Helena and Jonathan had uncovered something together.

Maybe “the wrong Blackwood” was not Jonathan.

Caleb had an uncle.

Sebastian Blackwood.

Victoria’s older brother.

A man whose name appeared nowhere in Caleb’s stories because he had supposedly severed contact decades earlier.

Rebecca searched corporate records.

Sebastian had never truly left.

Shell companies connected to him had received millions from Blackwood Memorial.

One company purchased the closed Swiss facility where Helena stayed.

Another paid Marianne’s living expenses.

Another financed Khloe’s private cardiac care.

The invisible person tying every branch together was not Victoria.

It was Sebastian.

Then Caleb called.

“I remember him.”

“Who?”

“Uncle Sebastian.”

“You said you didn’t.”

“I thought he died when I was a teenager.”

Of course he did.

“He used to visit Khloe’s mother.”

Marianne.

“What kind of visits?”

“I don’t know.”

But Marianne did.

When confronted with Sebastian’s photograph, she sat down.

“He’s Khloe’s father.”

That explained the DNA only if—

My stomach dropped.

“No.”

Marianne nodded through tears.

“Helena and Sebastian had a relationship before your parents married.”

Sebastian Blackwood was my biological father too.

Khloe and I were half sisters.

The Blackwoods had not merely targeted an investor’s daughter.

I was Blackwood blood.

Caleb was Sebastian’s nephew.

Meaning Caleb and I were biological first cousins.

I became physically ill.

Ara held my shoulders while I shook.

Caleb learned separately.

He called once.

I could hear him crying.

Neither of us knew.

But ignorance could not undo it.

Our marriage had been built over a biological truth Victoria apparently knew.

Why allow it?

Because marrying me to Caleb brought the Sinclair trust closer to Blackwood control.

Victoria had engineered the meeting.

Perhaps she expected marriage to eventually give Caleb leverage over my assets.

My mother had explicitly created protections against exactly that.

Legal separation activated my control.

Marriage had kept it dormant.

Suddenly the trust clause made perfect sense.

Helena knew someone might try to marry me into the family.

Then Dr. Evans called.

The sealed hospital report was complete.

He had preserved everything from the crash.

Caleb refusing consent.

Victoria attempting alteration.

Unauthorized chart access.

And one more thing.

Blood samples collected after the accident had undergone routine compatibility testing.

Khloe and I shared an unusual inherited marker.

The laboratory had flagged the possibility of close biological relation.

Someone ordered the result suppressed.

The authorization came twenty minutes after our arrival.

Before my surgery.

Before Caleb chose Khloe.

Someone at Blackwood Memorial already knew exactly who both of us were.

May you like

The authorization carried one electronic signature.

Sebastian Blackwood.
