The Signature That Saved Me / Chapter 7 / 15

Chapter 7 - Four twelve in the morning

The photograph arrived through Arthur.

Caleb no longer trusted his mother enough to send it through Blackwood systems.

My mother sat inside a vehicle.

Timestamp:

5:03 a.m.

Fifty-one minutes after her recorded death.

She was alive.

Weak.

But unmistakably alive.

Beside her sat Jonathan Blackwood.

I turned the photograph over.

A handwritten number appeared on the back.

Ara recognized it.

A Swiss medical registry.

We searched.

The number belonged to a private patient transfer arranged seven years earlier.

Destination:

Voss Rehabilitation Network.

Ara stared at the screen.

“That’s impossible.”

“You owned the network.”

“I didn’t authorize this.”

Someone had used her organization.

The receiving facility had since closed.

Archived records showed one unidentified female patient arrived under heavy confidentiality restrictions.

She remained eleven days.

Then vanished.

“Was it my mother?”

“We need the physical archive.”

We drove there the next morning.

The abandoned facility smelled of dust and disinfectant.

A former administrator met us with boxes scheduled for destruction.

Inside was a patient chart identified only as H.S.

Age matched.

Blood type matched.

Emergency admission date matched.

But there was no discharge form.

Instead:

Transferred by private representative.

Representative:

M. Reed.

Marianne.

I confronted her that evening.

She didn’t deny it.

“I helped Helena disappear.”

My knees nearly buckled.

“Why?”

“Because she asked me.”

“My mother was alive?”

“For eleven days after the hospital.”

“Then what?”

“I don’t know.”

“You transferred her!”

“To someone she trusted.”

“Who?”

Marianne began crying.

“Your father.”

My father had died when I was sixteen.

At least that was what I believed.

“Stop.”

“Lucia—”

“Stop making dead people alive.”

Marianne flinched.

I hated myself for saying it.

But my entire history had become a graveyard with doors.

She explained Helena had discovered the Blackwoods were laundering money through medical acquisitions.

She planned to testify.

Victoria discovered it.

Helena feared an “accident.”

So she staged her own death with help from Jonathan.

“Jonathan helped her?”

“Yes.”

That contradicted everything.

“Then why did Victoria sign the hospital form?”

“She thought Helena was actually dying.”

Jonathan betrayed his own wife to save my mother.

“What happened afterward?”

Marianne looked toward Ara.

“Helena intended to disappear temporarily.”

“Did she?”

“For eleven days.”

“Then?”

“She called me once.”

“What did she say?”

Marianne’s eyes filled.

“She said somebody had found her.”

“Who?”

“I asked.”

Marianne’s voice broke.

“She said, ‘Tell Lucia the wrong Blackwood found me.’”

Then Rebecca’s phone rang.

Dr. Evans.

Someone had broken into the sealed hospital archive.

The only file stolen was Helena Sinclair’s.

Security footage showed the intruder.
