The Signature That Saved Me / Chapter 6 / 15

Chapter 6 - The night my mother died

My mother had not simply died at home.

That lie became the center of everything.

Rebecca obtained sealed records through an emergency preservation request.

The hospital fought us.

Victoria’s lawyers fought harder.

That told me where to dig.

Seven years earlier, Helena Sinclair arrived at Blackwood Memorial shortly after midnight.

Unconscious.

No ambulance record existed.

No public admission.

She entered through a private executive bay.

Victoria signed the paperwork.

Jonathan Blackwood authorized restricted access.

At 4:12 a.m., Helena was pronounced dead.

Then her medical record was sealed.

“What happened between midnight and four?” I asked.

Dr. Evans shook his head.

“I wasn’t involved.”

“Who was?”

“The surgeon listed on the archived billing code retired years ago.”

“Name?”

“Dr. Marcus Vale.”

Rebecca located him in Vermont.

He refused to speak.

Then Ara showed me my mother’s diary.

The final entry was written hours before her death.

Victoria knows Marianne survived.

Jonathan knows about the trust.

If anything happens, Lucia must never marry into that family.

I stared at the sentence until rage became nausea.

Yet three years later, I married Caleb Blackwood.

“How did Caleb and I actually meet?”

I asked the question aloud.

Ara looked uncomfortable.

At a museum fundraiser, Caleb had supposedly noticed me across the room.

He knew my name.

My career.

My favorite painter.

I had considered it romantic.

Now it felt researched.

Rebecca investigated.

Caleb had purchased his ticket six hours after the guest list was finalized.

My name was on that list.

He had gone specifically because I was there.

I called him.

“Did your mother send you to meet me?”

“What?”

“The museum fundraiser.”

Silence.

That was enough.

“Answer me.”

“Yes.”

My chest tightened.

“But not for what you think.”

“Then tell me.”

“She said our families had unfinished business.”

“Did you know about my trust?”

“No.”

“Did you know my mother owned part of your hospital network?”

Another pause.

“I knew there had been investments.”

“You married me knowing our families had a hidden financial relationship.”

“I fell in love with you.”

“After approaching me under false pretenses.”

He sounded desperate now.

“Both can be true.”

That might have been the saddest part.

I believed him.

Maybe he had loved me.

Just never enough to choose me.

Then he said something unexpected.

“Lucia, my mother is scared of you.”

“Good.”

“No. Listen. Since you left, she’s been destroying documents.”

Rebecca leaned forward.

“Which documents?”

Caleb heard her.

“You have a lawyer there?”

“Yes.”

He exhaled.

Then lowered his voice.

“Khloe found something in my father’s safe.”

“What?”

“A photograph of your mother taken after the time on her death certificate.”

The room went silent.

May you like

“What are you saying?”

“My father had a photograph of Helena alive after the hospital declared her dead.”
