Chapter 9 - The Photograph Emily Couldn’t Remember
Emily was thirty-one.
Nine in 2004.
Photograph showed exactly that.
A skinny brunette girl sat on floor of Carter Housing office holding small gold ring between fingers.
Behind her stood Susan Carter.
Claire.
Aaron Reed.
Thomas Hayes.
And Henry Carter.
All central figures of Harbor Three.
Emily had no memory of being there.
Claire remembered.
Barely.
She had brought daughter to office because babysitter canceled.
Susan was preparing documents for Aaron.
Thomas arrived unexpectedly.
Henry came to argue with Susan.
Emily sat in corner drawing.
At one point Susan dropped ring.
Emily picked it up.
Photograph captured moment.
Nothing sinister.
No secret adoption.
No hidden identity.
A child happened to be present during adult crisis.
Why photograph?
Aaron was documenting evidence items.
Emily accidentally entered frame.
Then Claire admitted why she had lied earlier.
Susan later used Emily as an innocent reference point.
“If this ever comes back when our children are grown, remember Emily saw the rings before anyone had reason to fake them.”
Human timestamp.
Not legal proof by itself.
But useful corroboration.
Emily looked at photograph.
That explained why ring looked familiar when it fell in visitation.
She had seen it as child.
Perhaps held it.
Memory returned as feeling before image.
Gold against fingertips.
Susan laughing gently:
“Careful. That belongs to somebody who needs it.”
Who?
Emily could not remember.
Claire claimed she did not know which of three rings photo showed.
Then lab examined Sophie’s ring fully.
Under circle was a microscopic letter:
S.
Susan?
Maybe.
Or “seal.”
Or “Shaw.”
Investigators refused assumptions.
Good.
Next clue came from metal composition.
All three rings were made at same local jeweler.
Records had survived on microfilm.
Order placed June 2004.
Customer:
S.L.
Initials could mean Susan Lane? Her maiden? Wait Susan Carter. We shouldn't invent. Better Susan Carter's middle initial L maybe Susan Louise Carter. But record says S. Carter maybe too revealing. Need not confirm until ch15. Let's use customer field "S. L." could be "Secure Ledger". Hmm.
Let's say order placed through "SL Consulting", an entity that no longer existed. Its banking customer was sealed. That delays.
Each ring carried same symbol but different micro-letter:

T.
S.
Sophie’s was S.
So yes it corresponded S holder likely Susan, but chapter 9 not full owner? It's suggestive. We can say could be Susan or "seal". Still not confirmed.
Then Hayes received call from unknown number.
An elderly man asked:
“Did the S ring finally show up?”
Hayes went still.
“Who is this?”
“Aaron Reed.”
Hayes recorded call.
Aaron said:
“Don't let Derek Shaw touch it.”
“Why?”
“Because his father spent twenty years looking for that one.”
Hayes asked:
“What makes S ring different?”
Aaron was silent.
Then:
“It doesn't prove who stole money.”
