Chapter 10 - What Susan Tried to Protect
Aaron Reed agreed to speak through attorney.
He was alive.
He had lived under another name for twenty-two years.
No dramatic resurrection.
No secret prison.
He chose disappearance after unlawful transfer because he feared family retaliation and did not trust local institutions.
Over time he regretted abandoning daughter and allowing Thomas Hayes to carry blame.
He had reconnected privately with her years later.
His daughter wanted no public involvement.
Aaron respected that.
Why surface now?
Because Michael Carter had been arrested through exact same $480,000 system.
Aaron believed old safeguards were hurting next generation.
He explained three rings were not Harbor Circle membership.

After discovering digital records could be edited, Susan, Thomas, and Aaron commissioned three rings with identical seal and different microletters.

But Aaron refused to say who physically possessed S ring at end.
“Why?”
“Because Susan changed plan.”
“Why?”
“She found something about Michael.”
Michael had been thirteen.
Nothing criminal.
His custodial family trust had been used as temporary guarantee for Harbor Three redevelopment.
Henry approved it legally.
But Frank’s office retained routing identifiers after guarantee ended.
That meant one day someone could make a legacy transaction appear connected to Michael.
Susan saw danger.
She demanded records be purged or secured.
Frank refused because audits remained open.
So Susan built safeguard:
If Harbor Three records were deleted, remaining $480,000 escrow would move into protected hold.
It worked twenty-two years later.
Unfortunately modern system attributed movement to Michael.
Exactly scenario she feared.
Did Susan predict his arrest?
Not specifically.
She predicted his name could be attached.
Hence letter to Emily.
Then Aaron said something more disturbing.
“The S ring was the override.”
Override for what?
Susan designed safeguard with a manual authentication step.
If S-ring serial appeared in a sworn evidence declaration, escrow transfer could be verified as protective rather than theft.
Without it, system looked criminal.
So ring could clear Michael.
But only if matched to original archived declaration.
Where was declaration?
County sealed evidence vault.
File number erased from public index.
Thomas Hayes knew.
He wrote it down somewhere.
Officer Hayes searched father’s remaining notebooks.
One page had symbol.

CAMERA FIRST.
SEAL SECOND.
VAULT 317.
Now Hayes finally understood why father had told him to look at cameras.
If ring ever reappeared inside detention, preserve video proving when and where it surfaced before anyone could claim it was planted afterward.
The visitation recording had become chain-of-custody evidence.
