Chapter 1 - One Minute With His Daughter

Emily Carter had promised herself she would not cry in front of Michael.

She broke that promise the moment Sophie recognized his voice.

The county detention visitation room was designed to make people remember where they were. Gray concrete walls. Fluorescent lights. A bolted metal table. Surveillance cameras in both corners. A secured steel door behind Officer Hayes.

Michael sat across from Emily in an orange jail jumpsuit.

Eleven days earlier he had slept beside her.

Now he needed permission to touch his own daughter.

Sophie turned toward him.

Her tiny face changed instantly.

Michael leaned forward.

“Hey, sweetheart…”

Sophie stretched both arms.

Michael instinctively reached for her.

Officer Hayes stepped between them and placed a firm hand on Michael’s shoulder.

“The visit is over.”

Michael looked past him at Sophie.

“PLEASE… JUST LET ME HOLD HER ONCE.”

Hayes’s jaw tightened, but he guided Michael toward the secured door.

Emily rose.

“She just wants her dad!”

The steel door opened.

Michael stepped through.

CLANG.

Sophie began crying.

She reached toward the door.

“Pa…pa…”

Michael stopped on the other side.

Hayes stopped too.

Sophie reached again.

“Papa!”

For several seconds, Hayes simply stared at the child.

Then something in his face changed.

CLACK.

The lock opened again.

“One minute,” Hayes said. “Make it count.”

Michael rushed back in and dropped to his knees.

Emily placed Sophie into his arms.

Michael broke down the instant his daughter pressed herself against his chest.

“Daddy’s right here.”

Emily knelt beside them and wrapped an arm around both.

Sophie’s crying slowly faded.

Michael kissed her hair.

Then her tiny hand opened.

CLINK.

A small gold ring struck the concrete floor.

Michael looked down.

His tears stopped instantly.

Emily saw the ring.

The color disappeared from her face.

Hayes bent slightly.

Inside the old ring was an engraved symbol: three narrow lines crossing inside a circle.

His expression changed from sympathy to alarm.

He looked directly at Michael.

Then upward at the surveillance camera.

Michael noticed.

“What?”

Hayes said nothing.

Emily reached toward the ring.

“Don’t touch it,” Hayes said sharply.

Emily froze.

Hayes looked at the camera again.

Then he quietly moved his body between the ring and the secured door.

Michael stared at him.

“You know what that is.”

Hayes did not deny it.

“Officer?”

Hayes lowered his voice.

“I know that symbol.”

Emily’s heart pounded.

“From where?”

May you like

Hayes looked toward the camera for the third time.

“The last time it appeared in this building, an innocent man never made it to trial.”
