Chapter 9 - Sarah Broke Her Own Rule
The Carter family lost apartment in electrical fire at Bennett-managed property.
Investigation found faulty wiring contractor.
Bennett Residential’s insurer disputed liability.
Sarah believed company morally responsible before legal resolution.
Foundation board refused immediate $300k house purchase because claim pending.
Sarah was furious.
She created transition bonus to Michael, used his digital approval with permission? Did Michael verbally approve? He couldn't remember.
Then transferred to foundation as designated gift and bought Carter home.
Did she steal?
No.
Money went to affected family.
Did she bypass governance?
Yes.
Did she have authority to use Michael’s digital signature?
Email settled.
Michael had written:
Do whatever you need. Use my approval. I’m at Lucas’s party and can’t deal with board tonight.
There.
Michael had authorized broadly without understanding mechanism.
Sarah exploited vague permission for outcome she believed right.
No personal benefit.
But she later recognized hypocrisy.
Notebook:
I criticized David and Ryan for treating good intentions as substitute for process. Today I did same thing.
She self-reported next board meeting.
Board ratified after independent review.
No hidden scandal.
So why Ryan feared old birthday ledger?
Because current auditors comparing family transactions would see precedent.
Ryan believed he could justify Claire vendor payments:
“Sarah did it too.”
But Sarah had disclosed afterward.
Ryan had not.
Difference.
Then Michael confronted.
“You were planning to use Sarah’s mistake as defense?”
Ryan nodded.
“I told myself if she could bend rules for people she loved, so could I.”
“She reported herself.”
“I know.”
“When?”
“Now.”
That was important.
Ryan had remembered first half of story and ignored second.
People inherit excuses selectively.
Then Claire’s role in current party became clearer.
She knew Lucas had found recorder.
She feared it contained:
vendor discussions,
proxy plan,
old loan,
Sarah comments.
She searched.
Lucas refused.
Ryan joined.
Why kennel?
Ryan said he intended hold Lucas “for one minute” while Claire searched room.
Horrific rationalization.
“You put him behind metal bars.”
“Yes.”
“Did you think about how that would feel?”
“No.”
That was perhaps most truthful answer.
He was thinking about recorder.
Not child.
Claire kicked Oliver moments earlier because baby bumped cake while she was already furious? Prompt says Claire approaches from behind and kicks him; must preserve deliberate. She claimed he ruined cake but he hadn't before kick? Actually Oliver sits beside cake; Claire kicks forward into cake, then says ruined. That implies she causes cake destruction and blames him. Important.
Michael realized.
“Oliver didn’t ruin cake.”
Claire looked away.
“You kicked him into it.”
Silence.
“You caused the thing you accused him of.”
Claire began crying.
Why?
She had been angry that Lucas would not reveal recorder.
Oliver was beside cake.
Claire used him as outlet, then blamed him.
No justification.
That distinction made her action even uglier.
Then Michael’s own punch response.
Police had video from party camera.
He struck Claire after children placed safely behind him.
Then Ryan charged.
Michael struck Ryan while Ryan advancing.
Legal evaluation differed:
Ryan punch potentially defensive.
Claire punch retaliatory.
Michael accepted.
Claire’s assault did not make his retaliation lawful automatically.
Consequences would proceed.
Then board review of Michael.
Independent directors found:
he remained competent,
but absentee governance contributed to environment.
Recommendation:
temporary executive leave and leadership coaching,
interim CEO independent.
Michael accepted.
Ryan suspended.
Family did not automatically keep power.
Then Baxter wandered into Michael’s office carrying something again.
Not recorder.
A child’s sock.
Michael almost laughed.
Lucas said:
“He just steals stuff.”
There.
Dog not supernatural investigator.
Then Lucas added:
“But recorder wasn’t first thing he brought.”
“What was?”
“A key.”
Michael froze.
“What key?”
Lucas ran upstairs and returned with small brass key.
