The safe-deposit box was legitimate.
Opened through bank with estate counsel.
Contents:
Sarah’s original trust documents.
Backup recorder.
Letters to Michael, Ryan and Lucas.
Corporate compliance archive.
A sealed envelope labeled:
IF CLAIRE AND RYAN EVER MIX MONEY AND FAMILY AGAIN.
Michael almost laughed at specificity.
Sarah had known them well.
Inside:
Do not assume they are stealing.
Follow money.
Do not let Ryan call concealment protection.
Do not let Claire call humiliation harm.
And do not let Michael solve it by becoming angry enough that everyone else stops talking.
Michael sat back.
Sarah had anticipated all three.
Not exact future.
Patterns.
Then another document:
Bennett Family Assistance Ledger.
For twenty years family members privately helped each other:
loans,
rent,
medical bills,
business deposits,
school tuition.
Most undocumented.
Sarah had been formalizing.
One entry surprised:
2017 — Ryan → Michael: $85,000.
Michael frowned.
Ryan had given him money?
Purpose:
BRG payroll bridge.
Nine years earlier company had temporary cash crunch.
Michael believed bank credit covered.
Actually Ryan liquidated investment and supplied bridge anonymously through father David.
David later repaid.
Michael never knew.
Again Ryan’s history of rescuing secretly.
That pattern had positive outcomes before.
It taught him dangerous lesson:
If I fix problem quietly, disclosure unnecessary.
Then Claire entry:
2019 — Sarah → Claire: $50,000 business equity.
Known now.
Another:
2021 — Claire → Sarah: $22,000.
Purpose:
“Personal.”
Michael frowned.
Claire explained.
Sarah needed money?
No.
She had paid for private investigation into Mercer Renovation issue and refused use company funds.
Claire reimbursed part because investigation also cleared one vendor she had recommended.
Nothing sinister.
Then final entry:
2023 — Sarah → Ryan: “Recorder / responsibility.”
No amount.
Sarah gave Ryan recorder shortly before death.
Letter to Ryan:
You are the person Michael trusts when he stops trusting himself. That is a privilege, not permission.
Ryan cried reading.
Then:
If you ever hide something because you are “protecting him,” ask whether you are actually protecting yourself from his disappointment.
That was current scheme exactly.
Ryan admitted:
“I was.”
Michael:
“I know.”
Then safe box contained financial reconciliation template Sarah wanted implemented.
If family had used it, Claire-related invoices would have been disclosed automatically.
After Sarah died, Ryan postponed rollout.
Why?
He said software migration too expensive.
Actual:
he disliked oversight.
Michael had signed postponement.
Again.
Then Claire asked to speak.
She admitted proxy plan was hers.
Ryan never agreed.
She had drafted numbers.
She believed Michael should step down.
Was she entirely wrong?
Independent review found Michael’s disengagement real.
But method wrong.
Michael could hold two truths:
Claire’s criticism of his leadership had merit.
Her attempt to manipulate Ryan and hide conflicts did not.
Then Dana completed forensic audit.
No giant hidden fortune.
No offshore empire.
Total unsupported/improper Claire-vendor benefit:
$94,360.
Ryan already reimbursed $90,000.
Remaining liability plus interest/fees.
But false invoicing, undisclosed conflict and governance breaches could still cost careers.
The recording was not proof of millions stolen.
It was proof of pattern.
Then Michael asked:
“What about birthday payment?”
$48,000 invoice had never been paid.
Stopped.
It represented future legitimate event inflated by roughly $19,000 and billed early.
Claire admitted.
So no stolen $48k.
Attempted improper payment.
Specific.
Then safe box letter to Lucas.
Not to open until sixteen.
Michael left sealed.
Boundaries.
But beneath it lay photograph Michael had never seen.
Sarah.
Ryan.
Claire.
Another woman.
Caption:

Michael recognized building.
Old Bennett employee residence.
On back Sarah wrote:
THIS IS WHERE CLAIRE FIRST LEARNED WHAT THE BENNETTS DO WITH PROBLEMS.
Was that current arc or future? We still have Ch11–15. Could be tied to Claire psychology and resolved before Ch15, not new mystery. Let's use.
Who was fourth woman?
Natalie Brooks.
Former Bennett employee who disappeared from company records in 2012.
