Chapter 9 - The velvet guillotine

The opulent penthouse devolved into a theater of absolute, suffocating terror. The corrupt board members did not wait for an explanation; recognizing the catastrophic legal and physical danger, they scrambled frantically toward the private elevators, abandoning the matriarch to her fate. Victoria stood paralyzed in the center of the vast living room, her silver-beaded gown catching the harsh, incriminating light of the massive digital monitors displaying her crimes. Adrian walked slowly across the polished ivory floor, his dark tactical uniform a stark contrast to the luxurious surroundings. He stopped ten feet away from her, his piercing blue eyes devoid of any familial warmth, radiating only a cold, devastating finality. You are supposed to be dead, Victoria whispered, her voice a hollow, trembling rasp, unable to comprehend the survival of the son she had condemned to suffocate.
I survived the vault, Mother, Adrian stated, his voice a low, vibrating rumble that shook the crystal fixtures. Just like my father should have survived that car crash. You murdered him to take the company, and you tried to murder me to keep it. The illusion is over. Victoria’s aristocratic composure fractured completely. The terrifying, calculating billionaire matriarch was reduced to a desperate, cornered animal. She didn't attempt to deny the evidence blazing on the screens behind him. She fell to her knees, the heavy silver fabric of her gown pooling around her on the marble. Adrian, please! Victoria sobbed, her flawless makeup running in dark streaks down her face. I did it for us! Your father was weak; he was going to give the empire away to charity! I secured our legacy! I had to protect you!

Adrian stared down at her, feeling a profound, chilling emptiness where his love for her used to reside. You didn't protect me, Victoria. You held me hostage. And you are going to spend the rest of your life in a federal supermax facility, stripped of your name, your wealth, and your dignity. He reached into his tactical pouch, pulling out a heavy, physical set of steel handcuffs, dropping them onto the marble floor with a loud, definitive clatter. The authorities are in the lobby. Put them on yourself. As Victoria stared in horror at the cold steel on the floor, Emma stepped out from the shadows of the terrace. The beautiful, fearless woman who had started this war as a humble hotel cleaner stood tall in her black tactical suit, her hazel eyes blazing with victorious, unyielding strength. The game is over, Victoria, Emma said quietly.
But a sociopath backed into a corner is the most dangerous creature alive. Victoria stopped weeping. Her icy blue eyes snapped up, locking onto Emma with a sudden, manic, and terrifying clarity. She let out a harsh, dry laugh that sounded like tearing metal. The game isn't over, you stupid girl, Victoria hissed, her voice dripping with venomous triumph. She reached her manicured hand into the bodice of her silver gown, pulling out a small, heavy black detonator switch. It possessed a single, glowing red LED light, pulsing rhythmically. You think I would ever allow myself to rot in a cell? I rigged the primary support columns of this penthouse with military-grade C4 explosives a month ago. If I release the pressure on this trigger, the top three floors of this building are vaporized. We all die together. Adrian froze, recognizing the dead-man switch. The tactical advantage evaporated instantly. Victoria had turned the luxurious penthouse into a massive, inescapable bomb. She slowly stood up, gripping the detonator tightly in her fist, her aristocratic arrogance fully restored by the threat of mutually assured destruction. Now, Victoria sneered, her eyes gleaming with madness. Both of you are going to drop your weapons, and we are going to walk to the private helipad on the roof.
