Chapter 7 - The suffocating truth

The heavy, steel-lined vault became a rapidly shrinking coffin. The high-pitched whine of the ventilation system aggressively pulling the oxygen from the room was a terrifying, mechanical countdown to their execution. Adrian lunged toward the fused vault door, slamming his muscular shoulder against the unyielding metal. It was a futile gesture of sheer, panicked adrenaline. He drew his tactical pistol, firing three deafening shots directly into the locking mechanism. The bullets ricocheted dangerously around the small room, sparking against the steel, but the heavy door did not budge a fraction of an inch. We have less than ten minutes before hypoxia sets in, Adrian yelled over the noise, his chest heaving as the air pressure began to visibly thin. He turned to Emma, the panic in his piercing blue eyes warring with a desperate, protective instinct. Emma did not waste oxygen screaming or banging on the walls. The fearless intelligence that had allowed her to survive as a spy in a billionaire’s palace took over. She dropped to her knees, ripping open her black trench coat, and pulled a specialized, heavy-duty tactical multi-tool from her belt. She crawled toward the ventilation grate near the floorboards, where the stale air was being aggressively cycled out. She couldn't stop the vacuum, but she could alter the flow. Help me pull this grate off! Emma commanded, her voice surprisingly steady. Adrian dropped to the floor beside her. Together, utilizing the multi-tool and their combined strength, they violently ripped the heavy iron grate from the wall, exposing a narrow, dark ventilation shaft. Emma reached inside, her delicate hands feeling blindly through the dark, cold metal ductwork. I memorized the architectural blueprints for a dozen high-security facilities when I was training with Elias, Emma gasped, her breathing becoming shallow and rapid as the oxygen depletion accelerated. Vaults like this require a manual, analog failsafe valve to equalize pressure in case of an electrical fire. It has to be accessible from the interior duct. Her fingers brushed against a heavy, cold iron lever hidden deep within the shaft. She gripped it, pulling with all her remaining strength, but it was rusted shut, completely unyielding. I can't move it! Emma cried, black spots beginning to dance in the periphery of her vision. Adrian shoved his arm into the shaft beside hers. His large, powerful hand clamped down over hers, intertwining their fingers. Pull! he roared, channeling every ounce of his athletic strength into the desperate motion. With a harsh, metallic screech that echoed painfully in the small vault, the iron lever gave way. A massive, rushing hiss filled the room as the analog failsafe engaged, overriding the electronic vacuum and flooding the vault with a massive, life-saving influx of fresh, cool oxygen from the surface intake vents. Emma and Adrian collapsed onto the cold steel floor, gasping hungrily for air, their chests heaving. They lay side-by-side in the red emergency light, the sheer, exhausting relief of survival washing over them. Adrian turned his head, looking at the beautiful, incredibly resilient woman lying next to him. You just saved my life again, Adrian murmured, his voice a hoarse, ragged whisper. Emma looked back at him, her hazel eyes softening. We are even, she replied quietly. But we are still locked in a vault, and your mother thinks we are dead. Adrian pushed himself up into a sitting position, a dark, terrifying smile touching his sharp jawline. He looked at the encrypted hard drive and the murder evidence resting on the floor. Then we let her think we are dead, Adrian stated, the warlord fully awakening within him. We let her drop her guard, and we walk into her penthouse tonight like ghosts returning from the grave. The plan was suicidal, brilliant, and absolutely necessary. Victoria Hale had to be destroyed, and the only way to do it was to strike when she believed she had already won the war.
