Chapter 4 - The midnight audit

The Vanguard executive suite was a fortress of digital surveillance and biometric locks, but it could not protect Emma from the psychological toll of the infiltration. She stood by the towering glass windows, staring down at the glowing arteries of Manhattan traffic. She had sacrificed her identity, endured humiliation, and risked her life to secure her father’s vengeance, but the missing decryption drives meant Victoria could still legally reclaim the hotel. The silent contemplation was broken by the sharp, unexpected chime of her private, encrypted mobile phone. The device was supposed to be known only to Elias and her tactical team. Emma answered it, her delicate features hardening into a mask of stoic focus. It took me three hours to bypass your firewall and trace this number, Adrian Hale’s deep, authoritative voice echoed through the speaker. I need five minutes of your time. Emma did not panic. She turned away from the window, her hazel eyes scanning the monitors to trace the origin of the call. You don't have the leverage to demand five seconds of my time, Adrian. Your mother is currently fighting a federal subpoena, and you are unemployed. I didn't call to negotiate for the hotel, Emma, Adrian countered, his tone lacking the arrogant hostility he had displayed in the lobby. I called because I know where my mother hid the decryption drives. The statement froze the air in Emma’s lungs. It was an impossible concession. Why would the heir to the Hale dynasty hand over the instrument of his own family's destruction? Because I read the preliminary files you leaked to the marshals, Adrian continued, anticipating her skepticism. She lied to me. She used my signature on the vendor contracts to facilitate the laundering. If the syndicate decides to clean house, I am the one holding the bag. I want immunity, and I want her stopped before she pulls me down with her. Emma analyzed the tactical geometry of the offer. It could be a trap designed to lure her out of the secure hotel, but it was a risk she had to take to secure the final victory. Meet me at the Bethesda Terrace in Central Park in twenty minutes, Emma instructed. Come alone. If I see a single security contractor, I burn the drives and hand your forged signatures directly to the FBI. She hung up, retrieving a suppressed tactical pistol from a biometric safe beneath her desk, securing it in a specialized holster beneath her white blazer. She navigated the service elevators, bypassing her own security detail, and slipped out into the cold, dark night. The Bethesda Terrace was desolate, the magnificent stone arches casting deep, imposing shadows across the concrete. Adrian was waiting by the Bethesda Fountain, his dark hair swept back, his athletic build tense. He did not look like a broken billionaire; he looked like a dangerous, desperate man seeking a truce. Emma approached him slowly, keeping a calculated distance. You are taking a massive risk trusting me, Adrian said, his piercing blue eyes reflecting the dim streetlights. I don't trust you, Adrian. But I trust your instinct for self-preservation, Emma replied coldly. Where are the drives? Adrian reached into his coat pocket. Emma tensed, her hand hovering over her weapon, but he slowly withdrew a small, heavy brass key. She didn't put them in a digital vault. She put them in a physical safety deposit box at an archaic, private bank in the Diamond District. This is the access key. But it requires a dual-authorization. It requires her biometric thumbprint, or mine. Emma stared at the brass key. He was offering her the kingdom, but the alliance required her to step directly into the line of fire alongside the son of her enemy. As Adrian extended his hand to offer the key, a sudden, sharp crack echoed through the terrace. The stone pillar mere inches from Adrian’s head shattered violently, raining sharp debris over them. A high-velocity sniper round had just missed its mark. Victoria hadn't just hidden the drives; she had ordered a hit on her own son to ensure he could never hand them over.
