Chapter 7 - Claire Became Part of the Scheme
Claire initially received Rebecca’s anonymous packet and believed Anna had lied.
Then she learned enough to understand consequences.
Instead of stopping, she manufactured urgency.
Why send herself second message?
Because she wanted an excuse to act.
She wanted to tell herself someone else had warned her.
Ethan confronted her with store footage.
Claire cried.
“I thought Lily was going to lose everything.”
“She wasn’t.”
“I didn’t know that.”
“You sent yourself a threat.”
“I needed Martin to move.”
There it was.
Claire had contacted Martin after first packet.
He told her altered document was “credible enough to justify legal review.”
He did not explicitly tell her to confront Lily.
But he encouraged formal paternity petition after October acquisition vote deadline approached.
Claire asked what happened if Ethan removed as legal father.
Martin said Hartwell would temporarily protect Lily’s interests.
Claire interpreted that as salvation.
It also gave her emotional fantasy.
If Ethan were displaced, she—Anna’s sister—might become primary family voice around Lily.
Not guaranteed legally.
But Claire wanted it.
For two years she had resented Ethan’s limits.
He would not let Claire make school decisions.
Would not let her take Lily out of state without permission.
Would not let her move into mansion.
Claire called him controlling.
Ethan called it parenting.
After Anna died, Claire’s grief became possessive.
She wanted to be indispensable.
The false paternity file offered a story in which Ethan was outsider and Claire was protector.
So she wrote second anonymous message herself.
Then she began “testing” Lily.
Who did Mommy call?
Did Mommy mention Marcus?
Did Lily remember another daddy?
A five-year-old could not answer.
Claire showed photograph.
Lily became upset.
Claire pushed.
Lily drew.
Then Lily said she would show Ethan.
Claire struck her.
That was not Martin’s instruction.
Not Rebecca’s plan.
Claire’s choice.
A major payoff arrived early enough to matter:
Claire was not merely duped.
She crossed line from manipulated to manipulator.
But Martin’s role remained.
He had encouraged legal review based on document he likely knew was false.
Why?
The acquisition.
Ethan now understood surface motive.
Then Rebecca exposed deeper one.
Northlake acquisition itself was not Hartwell’s original idea.
It had been introduced by an intermediary company:
Aster Ridge Capital.
One silent advisory partner:
Vale Meridian LLC.
Vale.
Marcus’s surname.
Ethan stared.
Company formed three years after Marcus died.
Owner hidden behind trust.
Was someone using Marcus’s identity again?
Rebecca shook head.
“No.”
She had traced owner.
Marcus’s widow.
Sophia Vale.
