By now Claire could no longer pretend she only wanted protect Lily.
Ethan asked directly:
“If DNA would have cleared me, what did you think happened next?”
Claire answered:
“I thought you’d finally see Anna lied to you about other things.”
That was real motive underneath money and grief.
Claire resented Anna.
Not hated.
Resented.
Anna had been older sister everyone trusted.
After mother died, Anna handled family decisions.
Anna married Ethan.
Anna had Lily.
Anna became center.
Claire felt secondary.
When Anna became ill, Claire expected larger role.
Instead Anna named Ethan primary decision-maker and Daniel Cross independent legal backup.
Claire received no authority.
She felt excluded from own sister’s final months.
Then she found Marcus file.
It became emotional proof Anna had secrets.
Even after Anna denied affair.
Even after Claire had no biological evidence.
Claire wanted Ethan to feel betrayed too.
Martin recognized that.

“If paternity review happens, court may consider maternal relatives for temporary caregiving input.”
Not custody guarantee.

She began telling herself Lily needed her.
Then began undermining Ethan privately.
“Daddy works too much.”
“Mommy told me things Daddy doesn’t know.”
“Some families have more than one daddy.”
When Lily repeated none of it, Claire pushed harder.
On day Ethan came home, Lily had drawn blacked-out Marcus because Claire asked her to.
Then Lily said:
“I’m showing Daddy.”
Claire snapped.
She struck child.
That was endpoint of resentment she kept calling love.
Claire finally admitted:
“I wanted her to choose me.”
Ethan replied:
“She is five.”
Claire cried.
“I know.”
“You wanted a five-year-old to validate you against her father.”
“I know.”
No dramatic absolution.
Just truth.
Then investigators recovered Claire’s notebook.
She had written:
If Ethan sees Marcus, he’ll question Anna.
If he questions Anna, he’ll stop acting like their marriage was perfect.
If he stops believing Anna, maybe he’ll finally listen to me.
This went beyond Martin.
Claire wanted to break Ethan’s memory of Anna.
The fake paternity story did double work:
help Martin procedurally,
help Claire emotionally.
That made alliance possible.
Martin used her grief.
She used his scheme.
Then Ethan asked about Harbor House photograph.
Claire said she never understood it.
Martin told her it showed Anna’s family had lied about identity before.
He wanted Ethan flooded with doubt.
Did it actually connect?
Not to Lily’s paternity.
Daniel confirmed.
Diane’s Harbor House history was unrelated to Marcus and Bennett trust.
Martin weaponized unrelated ambiguity.
That was important.
Not every mysterious photograph belonged to same conspiracy.
Ethan refused let Martin merge them.
“Finish Lily first.”
DNA settled fatherhood.
Forged document traced.
Claire’s role established.
Martin’s motive exposed.

Who physically altered Marcus’s contact form six years earlier?
IT audit finally recovered file metadata.
