Chapter 2 - The Photograph Claire Showed Lily
Claire was removed from the house before Ethan asked Lily another question.
He did not force her to explain.
A child specialist would handle that later.
For now, Lily wanted only two things:
her yellow pencil,
and Ethan close enough to touch.
He gave her both.
Then he photographed every page of the notebook.
The disturbing drawing was not the first image.
Three pages earlier, Lily had drawn the mansion.
Then a woman she labeled MOMMY.
Then Ethan.
Then, on the next page, Claire beside the blacked-out man.
Underneath, in uneven five-year-old handwriting:
CLAIRE SAID THIS IS DADDY BEFORE DADDY.
That phrase kept Ethan awake.
The next morning Claire’s attorney delivered exactly what she had threatened.
A sealed envelope.
Anna Bennett’s name was written across the front.
Inside was a photocopy of a document dated six years earlier.
PATERNAL ACKNOWLEDGMENT — LILY BENNETT.
Named father:
MARCUS VALE.
Ethan read it three times.
There was a signature beneath Marcus’s name.
He recognized it.
Marcus had signed thousands of Bennett-Vale Development documents beside him.
The loops.
The narrow M.
The sharp downward stroke on V.
It looked real.
Attached was a photograph of Anna and Marcus entering the Bellmont Hotel.
Timestamp:
May 17.
Six years earlier.
Marcus died June 8.
Lily was born the following April.
Possible timing was uncomfortable enough to hurt.
But Ethan did not accept documents because they hurt.
He ordered an independent DNA comparison using his own sample and Lily’s through proper legal and medical channels.
Claire’s attorney objected to nothing.
Almost as if Claire expected the result.
Meanwhile Ethan found original hotel context.
Anna had indeed met Marcus.
She had told Ethan she was visiting her sister.
A lie.
Why?
Hotel records showed Marcus rented a private meeting suite for seventy-eight minutes.
No overnight stay.
No second room.
Another person entered five minutes later.
A lawyer:
Daniel Cross.
That immediately changed tone.
This was not obvious affair meeting.
It looked like legal meeting.
Ethan contacted Daniel.
Daniel was stunned Ethan knew.
“I promised Anna confidentiality.”
“She’s dead.”
“That promise doesn’t automatically die with her.”
“There’s a document saying Marcus fathered my daughter.”
Silence.
Then Daniel said:
“That document is not what Claire thinks it is.”
First real payoff.
Not denial.
Context.
“What is it?”
“I can’t discuss the file until I verify whether Lily’s interests permit disclosure.”
“Is Marcus her father?”
Daniel paused.
“I can tell you this much. Anna never came to me asking how to hide an affair.”
That loosened something in Ethan’s chest.
But only slightly.
Then Daniel asked:
“Where did Claire get the acknowledgment?”
“I don’t know.”
“Find out.”
“Why?”
“Because the original was destroyed six years ago.”
Ethan looked at photocopy again.
“Why would it be destroyed?”
“Because Marcus was never supposed to be listed as Lily’s biological father.”
The DNA results arrived forty-eight hours later.
Probability Ethan was Lily’s biological father:
greater than 99.99%.
Marcus Vale was not Lily’s father.
Claire’s most explosive claim was false.
But that did not make the document meaningless.
It made it more dangerous.

And they had waited six years to put it in Claire’s hands.
