Chapter 4 - The Key in the Palm

Ethan held his daughter tightly, his large hand gently cradling the back of her wet head as he began walking toward the safety of the interior doors. His voice was cold, steady, and protective as he spoke into her damp hair.

“You’ll never touch her again.”

Lily’s heavy crying slowly began to subside into a quiet, unblinking stare. Looking past her father's broad shoulder, her large blue eyes locked directly onto Claire sitting disheveled on the terrace deck. The innocent, terrified expression that had filled her face moments before completely vanished, replaced by a eerie, calm composure that belonged to someone far beyond her six years.

Resting her chin on Ethan’s shoulder, Lily slowly uncurled her tiny right fist in the foreground focus. Resting in her small, pale palm was an ornate, antique silver key, its metallic surface gleaming under the terrace lights.

“She said I’d never find the door,” Lily whispered softly, her chilling tone reaching Claire’s ears over the quiet rustle of the wind.

The color instantly drained from Claire’s face. Her jaw slackened, her eyes widening in pure, unadulterated horror as she stared at the item resting in the child's hand. The camera zoomed into a macro close-up of the silver key, revealing the number 17 deeply engraved into the metallic handle—a key that was supposed to be locked inside a bank vault in Zurich, marking the location of the evidence that could end Claire’s life forever.
