Chapter 12 - The Fall of the House
Claire was led down the grand staircase in handcuffs, her tear-stained face captured by two private security cameras mounted in the foyer. She screamed hysterically, threatening to sue Ethan, the police department, and the estate, but her voice died out as she was pushed into the back of a black police cruiser waiting on the rain-slicked driveway.
Inside Room 17, Ethan knelt on the floor beside the mahogany desk. He reached down into the dark recess beneath the kneehole, pulling Lily gently into his arms. He held her close, his eyes filling with tears as he looked around the room his late wife had prepared as a final trap for her killer.
"She kept us safe, Daddy," Lily whispered, her tiny hand resting against his neck. "Mommy knew you'd save me."
