Chapter 1 - The Words by the Terrace

“You worthless little brat!”

Claire’s harsh, furious voice shattered the quiet afternoon on the poolside terrace of the Carrington estate. Her manicured fingers dug tightly into six-year-old Lily’s golden curls, yanking the child backward with a sudden, malicious force that ripped a terrified scream from the little girl's throat. Lily’s small hands reached out frantically, her fingers losing their grip on her brown teddy bear as it tumbled onto the cream stone deck.

Before the child could regain her balance or retrieve her toy, Claire raised her heel and drove a forceful, sharp kick straight into Lily’s back.

A heavy splash erupted across the glowing turquoise pool as Lily tumbled over the concrete edge. Her tiny body hit the cold water, the sudden impact swallowing her whimpers beneath a wall of blue foam. Floating just feet away, the brown teddy bear bobbed on the surface as the child flailed her arms, her wet golden curls plastering across her frightened face. She surfaced for a fraction of a second, her large blue eyes wide with primal terror as she reached upward toward the coping stone.

“DADDY! I CAN’T SWIM!” Lily screamed, her voice cracking as she swallowed a gulp of pool water.

Claire stood towering over the edge in her fitted burgundy designer dress, her sharp aristocratic face completely unbothered by the child's desperate struggles. She adjusted her diamond earrings, looking down with pure, unadulterated contempt.

“Then stop screaming!” Claire said, her voice dropping into a cold, ruthless whisper.

Lily’s fingers slipped off the wet concrete lip. Her small cheeks puffed out as air bubbles escaped her lips, her body sinking beneath the glowing surface. Her tiny hand reached upward through the clear blue water, her golden hair floating like a halo around her face as the light reflections danced across her closing eyes.
