Chapter 8 - The Original Deed
The brass key was not primarily for Bank Box 317.
That was why Vanessa had found almost nothing useful there.
Box contained copies.
Key had a second purpose.
Old brass keys sometimes fit multiple lock mechanisms commissioned together.
Thomas Reed recognized photograph immediately.
William Carter had ordered three identical locks.
One at bank.
One at Red Cedar archive.
One inside original Carter Biomedical records room beneath manufacturing campus.
Rachel wanted original deed.
Not copy.
Why?
Because all later Red Cedar calculations depended on deed’s ownership schedule.
If schedule had been altered decades earlier, every modern number was wrong.
The $18.6 million could be too high.
Or too low.
The employee claims could be larger.
Someone had removed key before Daniel found rabbit.
Vanessa gave it to Eleanor.
Eleanor used bank box.
Then what?
Eleanor admitted she gave key to Thomas.
Thomas said he mailed it to Rachel’s attorney.
Attorney never received it.
Chain broke.
Someone intercepted key.
Who opened Bank Box 317 three days earlier?
Security footage finally arrived.
A man in cap.
Face partially visible.
Daniel recognized him.
Martin Cross.
CFO.
Martin was arrested? Better not rush. He was questioned.
He admitted opening box.
He had found brass key in old Red Cedar file mailed anonymously to office.
He used it because box number written on attached note.
Inside he found nothing except empty red folder.
He returned key to envelope.
Then envelope vanished from desk.
Martin looked guilty.
But his story had corroboration from assistant.
Someone was moving key from person to person.
Why?
Maybe key itself was bait.
Rachel had sewn it into rabbit because she knew anyone searching would reveal themselves.
Her hair was first distraction.
Key was second.
Real target:
original deed.
Then Daniel found Rachel’s handwritten notebook.
One page:
IF THEY TAKE KEY, LET THEM.
THE DOOR IS NOT THE SECRET.
WHAT THEY DO AFTER OPENING IT IS.
Rachel was tracking who sought deed.
She believed someone would alter original.
She had already photographed it.
Where were photographs?
Unknown.
Next line:
VANESSA KNOWS ABOUT COAT.
MARGARET KNOWS ABOUT BADGE.
MARTIN KNOWS ABOUT SALE.
NONE OF THEM KNOW ABOUT SECOND SCHEDULE.
Second schedule.
There.
Something beyond known ownership table.
Daniel asked Thomas.
Old man became silent.
“What second schedule?”
Thomas finally said:
“William told me it was destroyed.”
“What was on it?”
“Beneficial ownership before Carter Biomedical existed.”
“Who owned land?”
Thomas looked away.
“Workers.”
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
“How much?”
“I never saw complete schedule.”
Then why Rachel’s family had Red Cedar interest?
Because Samuel Blake had served as trustee for worker families.
After his death, records blurred Samuel’s trustee role with personal ownership.
Blake descendants may have received money that never belonged personally to them.
Eleanor’s $4.8 million.
Rachel’s $18.6 million.
Both potentially contaminated.
That gave Eleanor motive to hide history.
Vanessa motive to protect mother.
Martin motive to protect transaction.
Margaret motive to preserve trust.
Thomas motive to hide his old administration.
Everyone had something to lose.
Then Daniel received photograph from unknown sender.
Rachel standing at bottom of staircase on night she died.
Timestamp:
9:38 p.m.
One minute before outage.
She was holding red perfume bottle.
Behind her stood another person.
Only hand visible.
