Chapter 13 - Eleven Seconds of Darkness

Charles had sent Rachel message about original schedule.

He claimed he wanted to negotiate.

Really, he wanted deed.

Not to destroy worker claims entirely.

To delay disclosure until campus sale closed.

Charles believed sale would save hundreds of jobs and fund pension obligations.

Rachel believed that was same excuse powerful people always used:

Fix injustice later.

Protect institution now.

Charles entered basement using old maintenance access.

Rachel confronted him.

Vanessa followed.

Rachel told Vanessa to take children upstairs.

Charles demanded deed.

Rachel refused.

He reached for red perfume bottle because he believed deed hidden in base.

Rachel pulled it back.

Bottle struck blue electrical cabinet and cracked.

Charles realized she had hidden paper inside.

He tripped breaker deliberately.

His plan was simple:

darkness.

Take paper.

Leave.

Eleven seconds.

But Rachel moved toward stairs.

Vanessa was near upper landing.

Charles followed.

In darkness Rachel shouted.

Vanessa reached toward her.

Lights returned—

and Rachel fell.

Daniel stared at Charles.

“You pushed her.”

“No.”

“Vanessa?”

“No.”

“Then how did she fall?”

Charles said:

“I don't know.”

That sounded impossible.

Until investigators reconstructed staircase.

Rachel’s red perfume shard contained trace of clear polymer.

Same material used in temporary protective sheet placed over staircase during renovation.

Renovation crew had removed sheets earlier that week.

Except one narrow strip remained loose near upper step.

Photographs from morning before death showed it.

Rachel’s bare heel could catch.

She may have tripped.

But was that enough?

Medical reconstruction concluded fall could be accidental.

Could not prove push.

Then Vanessa finally remembered what she had suppressed.

When lights returned, she was holding Rachel’s hand.

Rachel slipped.

Vanessa tried to catch her.

For years Vanessa remembered fingers sliding away and feared perhaps she had caused fall.

She hadn't told Daniel because she believed nobody would trust distinction.

Charles fled.

Cowardice.

Vanessa called ambulance.

Then Charles returned after Rachel was taken away and removed broken perfume pieces, trying to find deed.

Vanessa caught him.

That was why she knew more than she admitted.

He found paper fragment but not deed.

He convinced Vanessa that exposing his presence would implicate Eleanor, Red Cedar and family.

Vanessa agreed to silence.

A catastrophic choice.

“Why did you hide shard in toy box?” Daniel asked.

“I didn't.”

“Then who?”

Vanessa looked confused.

Margaret.

Margaret returned from hospital before Daniel.

She found one shard Charles missed.

She wrapped it and placed it beside rabbit because Rachel had told her toy box was fallback evidence location.

So shard was preserved by ally, not killer.

Then Daniel asked Charles:

“Where is brass key from rabbit?”

Charles shook head.

“I never had it.”

Vanessa gave it to Eleanor.

Eleanor claimed she gave it to Thomas.

Thomas mailed it.

It vanished.

Yet someone had opened archive using second key anyway.

Original rabbit key remained missing.

Daniel realized something.

If duplicate keys could open every known lock, why had Rachel specifically sewn one inside childhood rabbit?

There must be another lock.

One requiring that exact key.

Thomas went pale.

“William had one lock re-cut.”

“Where?”

May you like

Thomas whispered:

“Inside the house.”
