Rachel believed Red Cedar records were wrong.
The $18.6 million interest credited to Helen’s branch had originally belonged partly to former Carter Biomedical employees whose retirement land-benefit rights were never properly extinguished.
Rachel did not want children inheriting money that might belong to dozens of families.
So she reduced provisional payout while investigating.
That eliminated obvious motive that Rachel was killed solely for her fortune.
But it created another.
If Rachel exposed historical claims, campus sale could collapse.
Potential liability:
$27–35 million.
Executives, heirs and investors had reasons to want investigation stopped.
Daniel returned to red glass.
Why preserve perfume shard?
Forensic examination revealed something nearly invisible.
A smear of dark-blue paint along one edge.
Rachel’s perfume bottle had struck something painted blue before breaking.
Nothing near staircase was blue.
Except basement electrical-panel cabinet.
Daniel remembered outage.
Eleven seconds of darkness.
Investigators compared paint.
Match.
The perfume bottle had been near basement electrical panel on night Rachel died.
But Vanessa said Rachel carried bottle from upstairs dressing room directly toward staircase.
Impossible unless bottle had been downstairs earlier and returned.
Or Vanessa’s memory was wrong.
Security system logs showed basement door opened at 9:34 p.m.
Five minutes before outage.
Badge:
Margaret Shaw.
Margaret denied entering basement.
Her badge had disappeared that afternoon.
Who had it?
Rachel.
Margaret had loaned it so Rachel could access old records stored downstairs.
Rachel went to basement.
She discovered someone tampering with electrical panel.
She carried perfume bottle because it concealed something.
What?
Eleanor remembered Helen giving bottle to Rachel years earlier.
Bottle had removable decorative base.
Inside could fit folded paper.
Rachel had turned ordinary keepsake into hiding place.
When bottle broke, paper disappeared.
What document had been inside?
Vanessa finally remembered Rachel shouting immediately before fall:
“Give it back!”
Not Vanessa’s name?
Noah had said Mom screamed Vanessa’s name.
Maybe both.
A toddler’s memory compressed events.
Vanessa admitted Rachel first shouted:
“Vanessa!”
Then:
“Give it back!”
Who was she speaking to in darkness?
Vanessa claimed she saw only silhouette.
Someone came from hallway near basement.
Rachel followed toward staircase.
Lights died.
Glass broke.
Then fall.
Daniel asked:
“Why didn't you tell police there was another person?”
Vanessa cried.
“Because I thought it was my mother.”
“Why?”
“They were wearing her coat.”
Eleanor owned distinctive navy coat with silver buttons.
But Eleanor had been at charity event with Daniel that night.
Photographs confirmed she remained there until after Rachel fell.
Someone wore her coat.
Another attempt to frame Blake family.
Then police searched basement storage.
Behind electrical panel they found one tiny object.
A red glass stopper.
Inside its hollow stem was a tightly rolled strip of paper.
