Chapter 1 - The Toy Box Beside the Stairs

Daniel Carter heard Noah crying before the front door had fully opened.

His briefcase hit the floor.

Across the bright living room, Vanessa stood near the staircase with a wooden hanger in her hand. Eighteen-month-old Noah was crying, stubbornly keeping himself between Vanessa and Maisie.

Daniel’s face changed instantly.

He crossed the room, forced Vanessa away from the children and pulled Noah against his leg.

Noah looked up through tears.

“SHE ALWAYS HURTS US!”

The sentence was imperfect, strained by a toddler’s limited speech, but Daniel understood enough.

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“He doesn't know what he's saying.”

Daniel looked at the hanger.

Then at Noah.

Then at Vanessa.

“You're done.”

Maisie suddenly moved.

She was staring at the large wooden toy box beside the dark staircase.

Vanessa followed her gaze.

For the first time, anger vanished from Vanessa’s face.

Fear replaced it.

Maisie hurried toward the box.

“No!”

Vanessa lunged.

Daniel intercepted her.

Vanessa stumbled backward into the wooden box.

CRACK.

The old lid split.

Toys spilled across the hardwood.

A faded stuffed rabbit rolled beneath the staircase.

Beside it fell a tissue-wrapped bundle.

Maisie grabbed both.

Vanessa went white.

“DON’T OPEN THAT!”

Daniel froze.

Maisie pulled away the tissue.

A jagged piece of deep-red glass dropped into her palm.

Daniel knew it immediately.

Rachel’s perfume bottle.

His first wife had owned a vintage ruby-red bottle shaped like a rose. Daniel had bought it for their anniversary.

Police never found it after Rachel died.

Maisie pointed toward the staircase.

“Mom had this when she fell.”

Daniel stared at Vanessa.

Rachel had died eleven months earlier after falling from the upper landing.

The official conclusion had been a tragic accident.

Noah pointed at Vanessa.

“Mom screamed her name.”

Silence swallowed the room.

Daniel picked up the stuffed rabbit.

It had belonged to Rachel since childhood.

“Why was this hidden?”

Vanessa backed away.

“I don't know.”

Daniel pulled at an old seam.

The fabric tore.

Something dark protruded.

Hair.

Human hair.

Daniel dropped the rabbit.

For several seconds nobody moved.

Vanessa whispered:

“Daniel, don't.”

He looked at her.

“Whose hair is that?”

“I don't know.”

Another lie.

Daniel could see it.

He reached for the rabbit again.

Vanessa suddenly screamed:

“DON’T TEAR IT ANY FURTHER!”

Daniel stopped.

Not because he intended to obey.

Because Vanessa was no longer looking at the hair.

She was staring at the rabbit’s left paw.

And beneath its worn fabric, Daniel could feel something hard.

May you like

Something small.

Something metallic.
