Chapter 2 - The Shadow Behind the Archway

Victoria swallowed hard, her diamond earrings trembling as she tried to regain her footing on the slick floor. The arrogant sneer that had defined her face for years had completely collapsed into sheer terror, but it wasn't just Arthur’s wrath that frightened her. It was the realization that the finger wasn't aimed at her.
Arthur slowly turned his head toward the dark corridor framing the double doors. His broad shoulders squared, but for a fraction of a second, the stern, imposing patriarch looked visibly shaken.
“Show yourself,” Arthur commanded, his voice echoing off the gold-trimmed walls.
From the deep shadows of the hallway, the light tap of customized leather dress shoes echoed against the marble. A tall figure stepped into the light of the crystal chandelier, adjusting a pair of thin silver cuff links. It was Julian Sterling—Arthur’s youngest son, the quiet, ivy-league educated scholar of the family who had spent the last five years living in self-imposed exile in London.
Julian smiled, a gentle, sorrowful expression that looked entirely out of place in the chaos of the dining room.
“Hello, Father,” Julian said softly. “You always did arrive right on time for the grand finale.”
Victoria gasped, taking another step back. “Julian? What are you… you weren't supposed to be back until next month!”
Damon struggled to his feet, wiping blood from his lip, his eyes darting nervously between Julian and Arthur. “You told us the old man was tied up in Washington! You said we had green light to clear the brat out of the succession line!”
Julian didn't even glance at Damon. His bright blue eyes, identical to Lily’s, remained fixed on his father. “I said Father was occupied. I never said he was blind.”
Arthur’s grip on Lily tightened protective. “You set this up, Julian? You orchestrated this humiliation of my granddaughter?”
May you like
“Humiliation?” Julian echoed, taking a slow step toward the birthday table. “No, Father. I merely created a scenario where Victoria and Damon would reveal their true colors in front of your own eyes. If I had simply brought you rumors of their abuse, you would have brushed it off as family politics. I had to let them act.”
Lily buried her face deeper into Arthur’s chest, hiding from Julian’s gaze. But as Arthur looked down at the child, a chilling realization began to settle in his mind. Julian hadn't just arrived to play hero—there was something far darker behind his calm demeanor.
