Chapter 1 - The Frosting on the Marble Floor

“No… that’s impossible.”
Victoria Sterling’s voice came out thin and broken, nothing like the cold, arrogant force that had filled the opulent dining hall of the Sterling mansion only seconds earlier. She stood frozen on the glossy cream marble, her fitted burgundy designer dress suddenly feeling like a vice around her chest. Her eyes moved from the heavy double doors to the little girl held securely in the arms of the most powerful man in the family, then back again, searching for a contradiction that would save her from what she had just understood.
Only moments ago, the air in the grand hall had been thick with cruelty and laughter. The white marble birthday table was center stage, dominated by a large cream cake covered in colorful sprinkles under the soft glow of a crystal chandelier. Six-year-old Lily sat terrified in her shimmering pale-pink birthday dress, her tiny body trembling as thick white cream frosting dripped from her golden curls, her cheeks, and her nose. Damon, Victoria’s ruthless accomplice, was still groaning on the floor near an overturned upholstered chair, clutching his shattered jaw where the old man’s devastating right hook had connected.
Arthur Sterling—the family patriarch whose presidential presence, swept-back golden-blond hair, and sharp blue eyes commanded absolute terror in the corporate world—stood like an unyielding wall. His dark navy suit was immaculate, the American flag lapel pin glinting under the chandelier lights as he held his crying granddaughter against his broad chest.
Lily’s tiny fingers clung tightly to Arthur’s crisp white shirt, her body shivering as she buried her face in his neck. The white linen napkin Arthur had used to wipe the cream from her tear-stained eyes fell onto the marble floor.
“Grandpa…” Lily whispered, her voice choked with sobs that cut through the dead silence of the hall. “They said… they said you ordered it.”
Arthur’s head snapped around, his narrowed eyes locking onto Victoria with a force that made the woman stumble backward into a dining chair.
“Who told you to say that?” Arthur’s voice dropped to a low, terrifying register that sent a shiver through every servant standing in the shadows.

Lily lifted her small, shaking hand. She didn’t point at Victoria. She didn’t point at Damon. Her trembling finger extended past Victoria’s shoulder, pointing directly toward the shadowed archway just outside the open double doors.
Before anyone could turn to see who stood in the gloom, Arthur’s body went completely rigid. He didn’t look confused. He looked as if a ghost had just walked over his grave.
