Chapter 15 - The Unbroken Line

By 2:00 AM, the estate was surrounded by black SUVs belonging to federal authorities. The impostor posing as Julian, along with Dr. Vance, Victoria, and Damon, were escorted out in handcuffs, their reign of deception brought to a swift, merciless end.
Inside the quiet, warmth of the main drawing room, a roaring fire crackled in the fireplace.
Thomas sat on the sofa, his broad frame trembling slightly as six-year-old Lily sat on his lap. The little girl held a warm damp cloth, gently wiping a tiny speck of cream frosting that remained behind his ear.
“Does it hurt, Daddy?” Lily asked softly, her tiny fingers gently touching the faded scar on his cheek.
Thomas smiled, tears welling in his eyes as he wrapped his arms tightly around his daughter, pulling her close against his chest. “Not anymore, my sweet girl. Not anymore.”
Arthur stood near the fireplace, holding a glass of scotch, watching his son and granddaughter with a rare, quiet warmth in his eyes. Beatrice stood beside him, looking humbled and silent, sipping her tea.
“The trust is secure, Father,” Beatrice said quietly. “Thomas’s return legally seals the voting control. The board won't be able to touch us.”
Arthur took a sip of his drink, his eyes fixed on the flames. “The board was never the real danger, Beatrice. Money is easy to manage. Blood is what tears empires apart.”
Thomas looked up at his father. “What about the Zurich clinic records, Dad? What about the second child mentioned in Clara’s report? 'Baby Girl A'?”
Arthur’s hand froze with the glass halfway to his lips. The warmth in his eyes instantly evaporated, replaced by a dark, intense shadow that settled deep into his expression.
He reached into his inner pocket, pulled out the blue hospital tag Clara had given him earlier, and stared at the worn plastic.
Baby Girl B — Switched at Entry.
If Lily was Baby Girl B, brought home to safety... then somewhere out there in the world, raised by strangers or hidden in the shadows, was Baby Girl A—carrying the exact same Sterling bloodline, and completely unaware of the fortune that belonged to her.

Arthur slowly dropped the tag into the roaring fire, watching the plastic melt into ash.
“Some secrets,” Arthur whispered in a voice so low only the crackling wood heard him, “are meant to stay buried until the storm comes back.”
