Chapter 7 - The Second Disappearance
Claire had Ava for only three weeks.
She placed her with licensed child-protection attorney named Helen Ward while trying to obtain emergency custody order.
Helen confirmed.
Ava stayed under sealed temporary protection because Robert was accused of unlawful removal.
Court should have notified Emma.
Why didn’t it?
Because case file named Ava under false identity:
Lena Brooks.
Who filed that?
Claire.
She feared Robert would find her.
Bad decision.
Then before hearing, Ava disappeared again.
Claire panicked.
Helen searched.
Police under false identity could not connect Emma’s missing daughter.
Why didn’t Claire tell Emma then?
“She thought I’d blame her.”
Correct.
Emma would have.
But still unacceptable.
Who took Ava second time?
Helen remembered a woman.
Silver hair.
Black dress.
Eleanor?
She denied.
Security camera showed woman was not Eleanor.
It was Robert’s longtime housekeeper:
Diane Marsh.
Different older woman.
Diane claimed Robert sent her to retrieve Ava.
She obeyed.
Where did she take child?
A lake house.
Robert arrived later.
Claire followed.
Another confrontation.
Then Robert finally admitted—on old audio found in Claire’s files:
“I didn’t take Ava to punish Emma. I took her because she saw L-24.”
Claire:
“She is a child.”
Robert:
“And if she tells the wrong person, they’ll know where Susan is.”
Susan.
L-24’s real name.
The red-handed girl was Susan Hale.
Now adult.
Alive.
Robert had relocated Susan and mother after violent father threatened them.
He falsified records to protect them.
Ava found photograph linking Susan’s new identity.
If violent father was still alive, exposure could endanger her.
That was why Robert panicked.
Was father alive six years ago?
Yes.
He died two years later.
Once he died, danger ended.
Why did Ava not come home then?
Because by then Robert himself was ill and Claire had lost track again.
Diane Marsh said she left Ava with Robert at lake house.
Next morning both gone.
Robert returned alone three days later.
Where was Ava?
He said “safe.”
No one pressed enough.
Then Eleanor revealed one final thing.
Before Robert died two years ago, he told her:
“I fixed Ava.”
Emma recoiled.
“Fixed?”
“He meant the situation.”
“Where did he send her?”
“He never said.”
Then inside gray laundry basket police found second hidden compartment.
A photograph.
Ava, older.
Alive.
Taken last year.
Standing beside a school sign:
ST. MATTHEW’S ACADEMY.
Vermont.
Emma whispered:
“She’s alive.”

SHE DOESN’T KNOW HER NAME IS AVA.
