Chapter 5 - Claire Came Back

Claire had been alive for years.

She had returned secretly more than once.

Why never contact Emma?

That answer came through another recording hidden under the basket lining.

“Emma, I’m sorry.”

Claire sounded older.

Tired.

“I stayed away because Dad convinced me you were safer if you didn’t know.”

Emma whispered:

“Dad.”

Claire continued.

“Twelve years ago I found out Robert was moving children through Bellmere under false names.”

Emma’s stomach dropped.

But Claire immediately clarified:

“Not trafficking.”

Emma exhaled.

“They were children from dangerous homes. Bellmere helped relocate them. But Dad was using private family money and fake paperwork because he didn’t trust the system.”

Protective motive.

Illegal process.

Robert thought bureaucracy exposed vulnerable families.

So he created private relocation network.

Room 24 handled temporary identities.

Red laundry codes indicated which files belonged to protected residents.

Why did Claire leave?

Because she objected.

She demanded legal oversight.

Robert threatened to cut her off financially and said she would endanger children if she exposed records.

They fought.

Claire left.

Months later she learned one relocation went wrong.

A child disappeared after transfer.

Claire blamed Robert.

She stayed away to investigate.

Which child?

L-24.

The girl with red-stained hands.

Then Emma asked Eleanor:

“Did you know any of this?”

“Parts.”

“How many parts?”

“Enough to know Robert was hiding children.”

Emma stared in disbelief.

Eleanor corrected herself.

“Hiding them from abusers. Not from families who wanted them.”

“Were mothers consenting?”

“Usually.”

“Usually?”

There it was.

One case was different.

L-24.

Her mother was unconscious after domestic assault.

Robert authorized emergency relocation without signed consent.

The girl was moved to temporary safe family.

Mother recovered and discovered child gone.

Legal nightmare.

Eventually they were reunited.

So child did not vanish forever.

Then who was she?

Records sealed.

Emma asked why Claire still cared if child was safe.

Because Robert altered paperwork afterward to make relocation appear authorized.

Claire found proof.

That was fraud.

Not kidnapping.

Then another bomb dropped.

Ava discovered same evidence six years ago in Room 17.

Robert learned she saw it.

He panicked.

He ordered Ava transferred.

To protect secret.

Where?

Eleanor whispered:

“North Creek.”

That was the facility where Ava supposedly died in fire.

Emma’s face drained.

Robert had sent Ava there.

Then fire happened.

And after fire—

Ava disappeared from everyone.
