Chapter 4 - The Photograph in Room 24
The photograph was recovered from Bellmere’s old sealed evidence box.
Ava had apparently taken it and hidden it under her mattress.
In the image, Robert Bennett stood beside a young blonde girl.
The girl’s hands were stained red.
Beside Robert stood a woman Emma recognized.
Claire Bennett.
Emma’s older sister.
Claire had vanished twelve years earlier.
Not died.
Vanished.
The family story was that Claire ran away after a bitter fight with Robert.
No contact since.
Emma had been twenty.
Why would Claire appear in a six-year-old photograph if she had vanished twelve years ago?
The photo was dated five years after Claire disappeared.
Emma stared at Eleanor.
“You knew she came back.”
Eleanor shook her head.
“I didn’t.”
“Then why are you scared?”
“Because Robert told me Claire was dead.”
Emma froze.
“When?”
“Seven years ago.”
“How?”
“He said he got confirmation from someone overseas.”
“Did you see proof?”
“No.”
Emma laughed bitterly.
“So this family buried one daughter and erased another on somebody’s word.”
Then back of photograph revealed handwriting.
CLAIRE — DO NOT LET AVA SEE THE RED ROOM.
Emma looked at Eleanor.
“What red room?”
“No idea.”
But Bellmere blueprints contained one section painted in old fire-code plans.
ROOM 24 — RED ISOLATION LAUNDRY.
So “red room” may not be torture chamber.
It was a laundry-controlled isolation space.
Red dye marked contaminated clothing.
Why would Ava be warned away?
Then Susan Cole explained.
Bellmere participated in research on fabric-borne contamination tracking.
Children were not experimented on.
Laundry was.
Red dye marked test fabrics.
But one child accidentally got dye on hands.
That could explain photograph.
Who was child?
Records used code:
L-24.
No name.
Then Emma realized.
Lucy.
No.
Impossible.
Photo predates Lucy.
Different child.
Then Claire’s handwritten note was found behind photograph:
THE GIRL IS NOT MINE.
ROBERT KNOWS WHO SHE IS.
Emma’s pulse spiked.
No hidden daughter.
But someone was hiding identity.
Then police traced the staged laundry basket.
It had been assembled inside storage unit four days earlier.
Security footage showed a woman in a hood.
She looked up once.
Emma stopped breathing.
