Chapter 6 - The Fire at North Creek

North Creek fire killed three children.

But none was Ava.

Independent reexamination proved it.

Ava’s medical records were mistakenly used to identify one victim because North Creek intake clerk had duplicated files.

Was mistake deliberate?

Investigators found no evidence.

The victim was later identified as Maya Lopez.

A tragic clerical failure.

Emma had buried the wrong child.

Why didn’t North Creek realize Ava survived?

Because Ava had left the facility twelve hours before fire.

Who took her?

Robert Bennett.

Security footage showed his car.

Eleanor stared.

“He told me she died.”

Emma’s anger became almost unbearable.

Robert was dead.

No confrontation possible.

But why take Ava?

Old voicemail recovered from Robert’s phone backup.

“Ava knows too much. I’m moving her until Claire stops.”

Emma whispered:

“He took my daughter because she saw evidence?”

Yes.

But did he intend harm?

No proof.

Then another voicemail.

Ava crying in background.

“Grandpa, I want Mommy.”

Robert:

“Soon.”

He sounded frightened, not cruel.

Then Claire:

“You can’t keep doing this.”

Robert:

“I’m keeping everyone alive.”

Claire:

“You’re destroying us.”

The recording ended.

So Claire and Robert had been together with Ava after transfer.

Claire had found them.

What happened next?

Claire said in recording:

“I took Ava from him.”

Emma stood frozen.

Claire had Ava.

Then where was she for six years?

Another voice message:

“Emma, I was going to bring Ava home.”

Pause.

“Then she told me something about Lucy.”

Lucy had not yet been born six years ago.

So not current Lucy?

Maybe Emma was pregnant? Lucy is young maybe six, but user says young girl. Could be 6. Possible.

Emma had been pregnant at time Ava disappeared? Need establish Lucy maybe 5. But prompt Lucy young blonde. Let's say Lucy is five now. Six years ago Emma was pregnant. Good.

Claire continued:

“Ava said Grandpa told her the baby you were carrying couldn’t stay with you.”

Emma went cold.

Her pregnancy with Lucy.

Why would Robert say that?

Then Eleanor whispered:

“Because he thought the red-hand case was repeating.”

What did that mean?

Robert believed someone was using Emma’s unborn child as leverage to force silence.

No proof.

He became paranoid.

Claire refused let him near Emma.

She took Ava and disappeared.

So Claire’s disappearance and Ava’s false death became linked.

Then Ava’s newest recording appeared:

“Mom, Aunt Claire saved me from Grandpa.”

Pause.

“But she didn’t keep me away for six years.”

Emma’s pulse changed.

“Someone else did.”
