Chapter 7 - The Second Gold Seal
Emma searched Charles’s surviving belongings.
Most had passed to Grace.
A tackle box.
Books.
Old hotel uniforms.
One pair of formal shoes.
Inside heel of one shoe, Emma found a narrow brass capsule.
Charles had hidden things like an auditor.
Inside:
A fragment of the Continuity Schedule.
Not whole document.
Clause 8:
Upon expiration of Operating Lease, title shall not vest in Whitmore Hotel Company unless Employee Stewardship Condition has been satisfied.
What condition?
Missing.
Then:
Founder-Line Consent alone shall not override employee condition.
That changed everything.
Even Eleanor’s Blackwood lineage couldn't automatically transfer property.
Employees mattered.
Potentially hundreds of current/former workers.
Now $640 million sale became unstable.
Eleanor accused Emma of trying to destroy jobs.
Emma replied:
“I’m trying to find out whether those jobs were used as excuse to steal their rights.”
Arthur warned both.
No conclusions until complete schedule.
Then brass capsule contained tiny second seal.
Gold.
Marked:
4-B.
Charles had divided Custodian Four evidence into A and B.
Envelope was A.
Where was B document?
Maybe second envelope in photograph.
Then Grace’s diaries revealed she had received anonymous phone calls for years.
Caller always asked:
“Do you still have Charles’s bag?”
Not “papers.”
Bag.
Emma looked at canvas shoulder bag.
It had belonged to Grace, not Charles—or so she thought.
Inside leather tag:
C.L.
Charles Lane.
Grace inherited it.
The envelope had been sewn inside Charles’s own bag.
Who sewed it?
Grace probably.
Then lining beneath bottom panel contained stitch pattern different from rest.
Emma carefully opened it with Arthur present.
Nothing.
Just rectangular discoloration where something had once been hidden.
Second envelope had been there.
Removed.
When?
Grace wrote:
I gave Eleanor what she asked for. I kept what Charles asked me to keep.
Emma confronted Eleanor.
“What did my mother give you?”
Eleanor stared at bag.
Then admitted:
“A sealed packet.”
“When?”
“Twenty-six years ago.”
“Where is it?”
“I destroyed it.”
Emma’s anger surged.
Eleanor corrected:
“I thought I destroyed it.”
“What does that mean?”
She had burned packet in fireplace at William’s demand.
But packet contained blank paper.
Grace had tricked her.
Real document stayed hidden.
Eleanor remembered seal:
4-B.
So Grace kept B.
Where?
Then Emma noticed old notebook that spilled from bag during ballroom humiliation.
Her mother’s notebook.
Emma had carried it for months.
Its cover was unusually thick.
Arthur opened spine professionally.
Inside:
A second cream envelope.
Gold seal.
4-B.
Eleanor whispered:
“Don't open that here.”
Emma looked around ballroom office.
“Why?”
