The Gold Seal Eleanor Feared / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10 - Lancaster Holdings

Michael Lancaster had not stolen $11.4 million.

At least not personally.

Lancaster Holdings was a special-purpose escrow company created by Michael while serving as outside accountant.

Funds moved there during refinancing to protect trust assets from Whitmore corporate creditors.

Temporary transfer.

Legitimate if returned.

They weren't.

Michael repeatedly requested instructions.

William delayed.

Then Lancaster Holdings invested money conservatively.

Value grew.

When Michael died, company was dissolved.

Where did assets go?

Not to Grace.

Not Emma.

A court-appointed successor trustee:

Jonathan Vale’s father, Martin.

There.

Martin controlled funds after Michael.

Jonathan had inherited records but not money personally.

He admitted knowing escrow existed.

Current value:

$33.2 million.

Held at independent bank under frozen trust.

So money wasn't missing.

It was inaccessible because nobody could establish valid beneficiaries without Continuity Schedule.

That explained why everyone cared.

Sale couldn't close cleanly while $33.2m escrow and land title unresolved.

Then Emma asked why Eleanor wanted her gone.

Eleanor gave more complete answer.

At first, class prejudice and anger.

She thought Emma was uninvited disruption.

Then she recognized Grace’s bag.

She feared Emma carried Charles evidence capable of stopping sale.

Both could be true.

Her cruelty wasn't secret strategy from first second.

It was character.

Her panic came afterward.

Then hotel security footage revealed something important.

Before Emma entered ballroom, someone approached coat-check area where she briefly left bag while asking directions.

A gloved hand touched it.

Could someone have inserted envelope that night rather than Grace sewing it decades ago?

Forensics on stitches showed concealed pocket old.

But envelope might have been removed and reinserted.

Who?

Camera showed man.

Jonathan.

Emma confronted him.

He admitted.

He knew Grace’s bag when he saw Emma enter hotel.

He had seen it years earlier.

He secretly checked lining.

Found envelope.

Then put it back.

“Why?”

“I wanted to know whether Grace had left it to you.”

“You could have asked.”

“I didn't trust you.”

Emma laughed bitterly.

“Apparently that's hereditary here.”

Jonathan admitted he also dropped champagne glass deliberately? No—the drop was genuine shock when he saw Emma open envelope publicly. He had expected her to leave first.

Why inspect bag?

His father left instruction:

If Charles’s gold seal returns, verify Custodian Four before Eleanor sells.

Jonathan was not protecting Eleanor.

He was secretly trying to stop sale until records reconciled.

Then why conceal?

Because as trustee he had publicly supported transaction.

He feared liability and humiliation.

Another compromised ally.

Then Arthur found final clue in $33.2m escrow account.

Withdrawal required three signatures.

Founder-Line holder.

Employee Custodian.

Independent trustee.

Independent trustee:

Jonathan.

Employee Custodian:

Emma, if succession valid.

Founder-Line holder:

Unknown.

Everyone assumed Eleanor.

But account records showed Eleanor’s signature had been rejected twice.

The bank did not recognize her as Founder-Line holder.

Somebody else held that role.
