The Gold Seal Eleanor Feared / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1 - You Don’t Belong Here

Emma Lancaster knew she looked wrong the moment she stepped into the Blackwood Grand.

Crystal chandeliers burned above women in silk gowns and men in tailored tuxedos. Champagne moved through the ballroom lobby on silver trays. Emma stood among them in a worn beige sweater, ripped jeans and scuffed shoes, clutching the old canvas bag that contained nearly everything she had left.

She had not come for the gala.

She had come because of a letter.

Before she could reach the reception desk, Eleanor Whitmore saw her.

The fifty-five-year-old hotel matriarch crossed the marble floor with the confidence of someone accustomed to rooms rearranging themselves around her.

Her eyes traveled over Emma’s clothes.

“You don’t belong here.”

Emma tried to pass.

“I only need five minutes.”

“With whom?”

Emma hesitated.

That hesitation changed Eleanor’s expression.

She grabbed Emma by the collar and forced her backward. Emma lost her footing and crashed onto her hands and knees.

Her canvas bag opened.

Water bottles rolled beneath tables. A notebook skidded across the marble. Clothes, receipts and personal belongings scattered before dozens of wealthy guests.

Nobody moved.

Emma swallowed humiliation and began gathering everything.

“Take your things and disappear,” Eleanor said.

Then Emma saw it.

A small cream envelope lying beneath her notebook.

She had never seen it before.

For one confused second she wondered whether it had fallen from someone else’s pocket.

Then she noticed the seal.

Old gold wax.

A crest pressed into its center.

Three intertwined letters:

B.W.H.

Emma instinctively closed her hand around it.

Eleanor noticed.

Her face changed.

Only for half a second.

But Emma saw it.

“You recognize this.”

Eleanor reached down.

“Where did you get that?”

Emma pulled it against her chest.

Guests began whispering.

The woman who had publicly humiliated her suddenly looked afraid.

Emma slowly broke the seal.

Inside was an old formal photograph.

A much younger Eleanor stood beneath the same chandeliers.

Beside her was a dark-haired man.

Emma’s thumb covered his face.

Eleanor took one involuntary step backward.

Then Emma noticed something written on the photograph.

Before she could read it, a champagne glass shattered somewhere behind Eleanor.

Emma looked up.

A man among the guests had dropped it.

His face had gone white.

Eleanor turned toward him.

Emma looked between them.

“So THAT’S why you wanted me gone.”

The man disappeared into the crowd.

May you like

But before he vanished, Emma saw the ring on his hand.

It carried the exact same gold crest as the envelope.
