Chapter 6 - The Window
Behind decorative molding beside upper landing window was a tiny storage device.
Not camera.
Backup recorder.
William had installed it after valuables disappeared during renovation.
It captured foyer and staircase.
Audio too.
Months of archives.
Most automatically overwritten.
But flagged clips remained.
Why flagged?
Motion during restricted hours.
One clip dated three months before William died.
Caroline and David Morgan stood in foyer.
David said:
“If William puts employee block into trust, Richard won't be able to refinance without approval.”
Caroline answered:
“Then convince him not to.”
David:
“He doesn't listen to me.”
Caroline:
“He listens to Richard.”
David laughed.
“Richard doesn't read anything longer than two pages.”
Richard winced.
Accurate.
Then David said:
“We need someone who does.”
Caroline replied:
“Emily.”
Emily stared.
They had once planned to recruit her.
Not remove her.
Why change?
Next clip.
Six weeks later.
David speaking to Melissa.
“Emily won't sign anything she doesn't understand.”
Melissa:
“Then don't give her time to understand.”
That was worse.
Another clip.
After William’s death.
Melissa:
“Caroline thinks she becomes protector if Emily is out.”
David:
“She does.”
Melissa:
“Only temporarily.”
David:
“She doesn't need to know that.”
Caroline had been manipulated.
Again, not absolved.
She pushed stroller.
But someone fed her incomplete information.
David wanted her desperate.
Why?
Chaos.
If Caroline challenged Emily, trust entered litigation.
Harborstone could argue Carter Development needed emergency refinancing during governance uncertainty.
David created pressure.
Then Richard asked Caroline:
“When did he tell you Emily had to be removed?”
“Two months ago.”
“What exactly?”
“That Emily would eventually control employee block and erase everything I built.”
False.
Temporary protector only.
David weaponized Caroline’s deepest fear:
Being erased.
Then Emily asked:
“Did he tell you to push stroller?”
“No.”
“Did he tell you to frame me?”
Caroline hesitated.
“He said I needed evidence you were unsafe.”
Choice remained hers.
Then window recorder produced most important clip.
Night before stroller incident.
David and Melissa.
Melissa:
“The amendment won't survive forensic review.”
David:
“It doesn't have to.”
Melissa:
“Then why create it?”
David:
“Because Richard only needs to believe he has consolidated control long enough to sign Harborstone term sheet.”
Fraud was not designed to survive court.
It only needed to create false confidence.
Richard would sign financing.
Harborstone would secure collateral.
Later dispute would explode.
But Harborstone might already hold rights difficult and expensive to unwind.
Sophisticated.
Dangerous.
Then Melissa said:
“What about Caroline?”
David:
“She'll blame Emily.”
“And Emily?”
“She'll blame Caroline.”
“And Richard?”
David laughed.
“He'll do what Richard always does.”
“What?”
“Pick the wrong enemy first.”
Emily looked at husband.
Pool-like theme repeated.
Richard’s impulsiveness was known vulnerability.
Not only Caroline exploited it.
Business partners did too.
Then David said one final thing:
“Once he signs, Carter House doesn't matter.”
Melissa:
“What does?”
“Westhaven.”
Richard stood.
Westhaven was Carter Development’s largest undeveloped coastal property.
Worth perhaps $120 million.
Harborstone wanted it as collateral.
Richard had refused.
The forged amendment would allow him to believe trust restrictions no longer applied.
Then Phoebe checked scheduled transactions.
Richard had a meeting with Harborstone.
Tomorrow.
9:00 AM.
The same tomorrow Caroline feared.
Emily realized:
Caroline had been told Emily needed to be gone before nine.
Not because protector status transferred instantly.
Because David needed Richard walking into that meeting believing the family had consolidated authority.
The stroller incident was never the entire plan.
It was a distraction designed to fracture the family one night before a $120 million decision.
Then Richard’s phone rang.
David Morgan.
Richard answered on speaker.
“David.”
“Richard, I heard there was an incident.”
“How?”
Pause.
“Caroline called me.”
Caroline shook her head.
She hadn't.
David continued:
“Tomorrow’s closing is still on. Don't let family drama ruin this.”
Richard looked at Emily.
Then Phoebe.
He finally did something different.
He did not accuse.
He asked:
“David, why did you forge my father’s amendment?”
Silence.
