Chapter 1 - She Saw Who Pushed It

The stroller came down the staircase faster than Emily Carter could run.
One second, she was standing beneath the chandelier in the foyer.
The next—
a dark teal stroller appeared at the top of the stairs.
Then it dropped.
“No!”
Emily’s body moved before her mind did.
The stroller struck one step, bounced sideways, then continued downward.
Inside was three-month-old Sophie.
“My baby!”
Emily ran toward it.
Behind the stroller, at the upper landing, stood Caroline Whitmore.
Beige blouse.
Perfect hair.
One hand still resting against the carved railing.
And a face so calm that Emily would remember it for the rest of her life.
The stroller reached the final steps.
Emily caught the handle.
Momentum nearly pulled her down, but she twisted, braced herself against the newel post and stopped it.
Sophie screamed.
Emily ripped open the harness and pulled her daughter against her chest.
“Mommy’s here. Mommy’s here.”
Footsteps came from the west hallway.
“Emily?”
Richard Carter rushed into the foyer.
Her husband wore the navy jacket he had come home in twenty minutes earlier.
He saw Emily.
The stroller.
Sophie crying.
Then Caroline came down the staircase.
“She let it fall!”
Emily stared at her.
“What?”
Caroline pointed directly at her.
“I saw her leave Sophie near the stairs.”
“That's a lie!”
Richard looked at his daughter’s red face.
Fear became anger too quickly.
“How could you?”
“Richard, I didn't—”
He grabbed Emily.
The confrontation lasted seconds, but it was enough.
Emily twisted away while keeping Sophie protected against her chest.
“Don't touch me!”
Then—
“Dad…”
A small voice.
Everyone stopped.
Six-year-old Lily stood halfway up the staircase.
Bare feet.
Pink dress.
A smartphone shaking between her hands.
Richard stared.
“Lily?”
The little girl looked at Caroline.
“She’s lying.”
Caroline’s expression changed.
Emily saw it.
So did Richard.
Lily descended one step.
“I saw who pushed it.”
Richard slowly released Emily.
Caroline recovered.
“She doesn't understand what she saw.”
“I recorded it.”
Silence.
Richard climbed toward Lily and took the phone.
He watched.
Five seconds.
Ten.
His face emptied.
Then he looked toward Caroline.
“You did this?”
Caroline said nothing.
Richard replayed it.
Emily could see enough from below.
Caroline approaching the stroller.
Looking around.
Then pushing it toward the stairs.
There was no misunderstanding.
No accident.
Richard’s hands began trembling.
Emily expected him to explode.
Instead she stepped between him and Caroline.
“No.”
He looked at her.
“Emily—”
“Take Sophie.”
He obeyed.
That surprised both of them.
Emily handed him their baby.
“Now call the police.”
Caroline finally spoke.
“You don't understand what you're doing.”
Emily turned.
“I understand exactly what you did.”
“No.”
Caroline looked at Richard.
“I wasn't trying to hurt Sophie.”
Richard stared at her.
“You pushed my daughter down a staircase.”
Caroline’s eyes moved toward Lily.
“No.”
Something about the way she said it bothered Emily.
Not denial.
Correction.
Then Caroline whispered:
“Sophie wasn't the reason.”
Emily felt cold.
“What does that mean?”
Caroline looked directly at her.
“I needed him to believe you were responsible.”
Richard’s face hardened.
“Why?”
Before Caroline could answer, Lily spoke again.
“There’s another video.”
Everyone turned.
Lily pointed toward the phone.
“I started recording because Aunt Caroline was talking to someone.”
Richard frowned.
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
“What did she say?”
Lily swallowed.
“She said Mommy had to be gone before tomorrow.”
Emily stopped breathing.
Richard looked at Caroline.
“What's tomorrow?”
For the first time, Caroline looked genuinely frightened.
Not because of the police.
May you like
Not because of the recording.
Because Richard had asked that question.
