Chapter 3 - Emily’s Signature

The signature was excellent.

That frightened Emily more than a bad forgery would have.

Every loop looked right.

The angle of the E.

The narrow cross on the t.

Even the way she shortened Carter when signing quickly.

Richard knew instantly.

“That's hers.”

Emily looked at him.

“No.”

“I mean it looks like yours.”

“It isn't.”

Jonathan Pierce did not argue.

He ordered the original preserved and contacted the trust’s independent fiduciary.

Then he asked Emily an unusual question.

“Did you sign mortgage documents last October?”

“Yes.”

“Hospital forms?”

“Yes.”

“Estate-planning documents?”

“With Richard.”

Jonathan nodded.

Someone had plenty of authentic samples.

The forged acknowledgment stated that after Sophie’s birth, Emily would serve as temporary parental protector of a 42% voting block until Sophie turned twenty-five.

Emily nearly laughed.

“I don't know anything about running Richard’s company.”

“You wouldn't run it.”

Jonathan corrected her.

“You would control how the trust votes on certain major decisions.”

Richard looked stunned.

“Dad gave Emily forty-two percent?”

“No.”

“Sophie is the beneficiary.”

Jonathan pointed toward baby.

“Emily exercises limited protective voting authority while Sophie is a minor.”

Now Caroline’s plan made sense.

If Emily were declared unsafe or removed from custodial authority, protector role moved to backup.

Who?

Richard assumed himself.

Wrong.

William deliberately excluded executives of Carter Development.

Conflict of interest.

The backup protector was Caroline.

Emily looked toward staircase.

“So she needed me disqualified.”

Jonathan nodded.

“And yesterday's incident could have provided dramatic evidence.”

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“She was willing to risk Sophie for a vote.”

Jonathan did not answer beyond evidence.

Then the independent fiduciary arrived.

Phoebe Grant.

Sixty-two.

Former federal banking attorney.

She had known William Carter for thirty years and seemed unimpressed by the mansion.

She reviewed forged signature.

Then said:

“This document was unnecessary.”

Everyone stared.

“What?”

Emily’s protector authority activated automatically upon Sophie’s birth.

She never needed to sign acknowledgment.

The signature merely confirmed she had been informed.

“So whoever forged it…”

Phoebe nodded.

“…wanted us to believe Emily knew.”

Why?

If Emily later claimed ignorance, forged acknowledgment could make her look dishonest.

Another layer.

Someone wasn't merely trying to remove her.

They were preparing to discredit her.

Caroline?

Maybe.

Phoebe asked to inspect original trust files.

One document was missing.

Schedule Seven.

“What is it?” Richard asked.

Phoebe answered:

“The document explaining why William created this trust.”

Caroline looked toward hallway.

Tiny movement.

Emily saw.

“Where is it?”

Caroline denied knowing.

Then Lily appeared with a police-approved family advocate.

She was not supposed to be part of adult conversation.

But she carried something.

A yellow envelope.

“Mom?”

Emily crouched.

“What is that?”

“I found it in Grandpa’s chair.”

Everyone stopped.

William’s reading chair remained in upstairs library.

Lily said she had hidden there after stroller incident because she was scared.

Under seat cushion she felt paper.

Phoebe took envelope carefully.

William’s handwriting:

FOR RICHARD — IF CAROLINE EVER ASKS ABOUT SCHEDULE SEVEN.

Richard stared at Caroline.

“You knew about this.”

Caroline whispered:

“Yes.”

Phoebe opened it.

Inside was not Schedule Seven.

Only a letter.

Richard,

If you are reading this, Caroline has probably discovered that Sophie’s birth changes more than voting control.

Do not punish her for being afraid.

But do not trust fear dressed as entitlement.

Richard looked up.

Caroline was crying.

William continued:

Schedule Seven is not in my files.

Emily has it.

Emily nearly dropped the letter.

“I've never seen it.”

Then William’s final sentence:

She just doesn't know what she's carrying.

Emily looked down at herself.

Nothing.

Then Richard’s eyes moved toward her wedding ring.

Emily followed his gaze.

Inside the band, William had engraved something before their wedding.

She had always thought it was a date.

7-14-42.

Phoebe went still.

“That isn't a date.”

“What is it?”

Phoebe looked at Emily.

“Vault seven.”

May you like

“Drawer fourteen.”

“Box forty-two.”
