Chapter 2 - Before Tomorrow

Caroline Whitmore was not Richard’s sister.
“Aunt Caroline” was simply what Lily had always called her.
She was Richard’s father’s second wife.
Forty years younger than the late William Carter and only five years older than Richard himself.
William died eighteen months earlier.
Caroline remained in Carter House because William’s estate had granted her temporary residency while several trusts were being settled.
Emily had tolerated it.
Barely.
Caroline was elegant, useful and impossible to read.
She remembered birthdays.
Donated to hospitals.
Never raised her voice.
And apparently had just tried to frame Emily for endangering her own baby.
Police arrived.
Sophie was examined.
No serious injury.
Emily cried when the doctor said it.
Richard stood beside her.
“I’m sorry.”
Emily looked at him.
“For what?”
His silence answered.
For believing Caroline.
For touching Emily in anger.
For choosing an accusation before asking a question.
Emily said quietly:
“You don't get to make what you did disappear because Caroline did something worse.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
Richard lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
It wasn't forgiveness.
But it was a beginning.
Meanwhile, Lily’s phone changed the investigation.
The first recording showed Caroline pushing the stroller.
The second began three minutes earlier.
Lily had apparently been recording herself sliding a toy horse along the railing when she heard Caroline downstairs.
Caroline’s voice:
“Tomorrow morning. Once Emily signs, it becomes permanent.”
A man replied through speakerphone.
Too muffled to identify.
Caroline:
“She won't sign if she knows what Sophie activated.”
Then:
“Richard still thinks the house is his.”
The man laughed.
Finally:
“Get Emily out before nine.”
Recording ended.
Emily stared at Richard.
“What does Sophie activate?”
“I don't know.”
“Why does Caroline think I have to sign something?”
“I don't know.”
“Why does she think this house isn't yours?”
Richard had no answer for that either.
The next morning explained part of it.
At 8:40, a black Mercedes entered the driveway.
An attorney named Jonathan Pierce stepped out carrying a leather case.
He represented the estate of William Carter.
Richard met him in foyer.
“You were expecting me?” Jonathan asked.
“No.”
Jonathan checked his watch.
“Your wife was.”
Emily frowned.
“I've never met you.”
Jonathan became concerned.
He opened his case.
Inside was a document requiring Emily’s acknowledgment.
Not consent.
Acknowledgment.
William Carter had created something called the Carter Descendant Preservation Trust twelve years earlier.
Richard knew the name.
He believed it contained old family real estate.
Jonathan corrected him.
“It owns this mansion.”
Richard stared.
“And forty-two percent of Carter Development.”
Richard went silent.
Emily knew the company.
Richard was CEO.
His family had controlled it for three generations.
“What does this have to do with Sophie?”
Jonathan looked toward the baby.
“Her birth activated the final succession provision.”
Caroline appeared at top of stairs.
Police had not detained her overnight pending investigation and counsel, but she had been ordered to remain separated from children.
Jonathan saw her.
His expression changed.
“You're still here?”
Caroline went pale.
Richard noticed.
“Why shouldn't she be?”
Jonathan slowly removed another document.
“Because yesterday at 4:17 PM, Mrs. Whitmore filed a petition claiming Emily was an unsafe parent.”
Emily stared.
Richard looked at Caroline.
“You filed it before the stroller incident?”
Caroline said nothing.
Jonathan continued:
“She attached photographs.”
“What photographs?”
Emily took them.
Sophie unattended beside bathtub.
Sophie near open balcony door.
Medication beside Sophie’s bottle.
Every photograph looked terrible.
Every one was fake.
Or staged.
Emily whispered:
“She’s been building this.”
Jonathan nodded.
“For at least six weeks.”
Richard looked ready to explode.
But Jonathan wasn't finished.
“If Emily were removed as Sophie’s custodial parent before nine this morning, Caroline intended to invoke an emergency provision.”
“For what?”
Jonathan looked at Richard.
“To become interim protector of the Carter Descendant Trust.”
Richard laughed once.
“That makes no sense. Caroline isn't a Carter.”
Jonathan answered:
“According to your father’s trust…”
He hesitated.
“…neither is Emily.”
Emily frowned.
“Obviously.”
Jonathan looked at her.
“No, Mrs. Carter.”
“You misunderstand.”
“The trust doesn't define Carter by marriage.”
He turned the document toward her.
“It defines the controlling parent through Sophie.”
Emily stared at the page.
Her own name was already there.
And beside it—
was a signature dated four months before Sophie was born.
Emily whispered:
“I never signed this.”

Jonathan’s face changed.
“Then we have a much bigger problem.”
