Chapter 8 - The cold calculation

The holding cell was a bleak, concrete cube that smelled of bleach and despair. Scarlett sat on the rigid metal bench, her mind racing through the flawless execution of Lily's frame job. The child was tying up loose ends before executing her final maneuver. Scarlett knew that once she was transferred to federal prison, she would suffer a tragic, fatal accident orchestrated by one of Lily's bought-and-paid-for inmates. She used her one phone call not to contact a lawyer, but to dial a specialized, off-the-books communications expert she had retained during her corporate strategy days, a man who owed her his life. She instructed him to liquidate her assets and secure her bail through a proxy bondsman, no matter the cost. Meanwhile, in the sprawling Connecticut estate, the silence was agonizing. Adrian sat in his study, the fragmented remnants of his reality bleeding out around him. He pulled up the security footage of Scarlett's alleged espionage activities, the files provided by the FBI. He watched the digital timestamps, his brilliant mind analyzing the data streams. He noticed a microscopic discrepancy. The server logs showed active data transmission during a time when Scarlett was physically detained in a holding room. The frame job was perfect, but the timing was off by a fraction of a second. The doubt crystallized into a cold, terrifying certainty. Adrian left his study and walked silently toward the nursery wing. It was three in the morning. He opened the door to Lily’s bedroom. The child was fast asleep, her golden curls fanned out across the pillows, looking like a painting of divine innocence. The white orthopedic brace rested on the nightstand. Adrian approached it, his heart hammering against his ribs. He picked it up, feeling the unnatural weight. He ran his thumb along the silver clasp, searching for the microscopic seam Scarlett had warned him about. As his finger brushed the hidden latch, a sudden, blinding arc of blue electricity shot from the brace, sending a high-voltage shock directly into his hand. Adrian gasped, dropping the brace onto the floor. The pain was excruciating, burning up his arm. In the darkness of the room, Lily sat up. Her eyes were not heavy with sleep. They were wide, alert, and devoid of any childlike warmth. Why are you snooping through my things, Daddy, the seven-year-old asked, her voice an eerie, monotone whisper that chilled Adrian to his very core.
